SIGN UP FOR NOTIFY NYC

Notify NYC [7]is New York’s official source for alerts and info about emergency events and city services. It’s free to register and you can get alerts via text or phone call, and the updates sent to you can be tailored to your specific neighborhood so you’re always in the know about what’s happening around you. Even if you don’t receive many alerts during this snow storm, it’s a good service to subscribe to for future inclement weather and possible disasters.

DON’T DRIVE

This one is a no-brainer, but it warrants repeating because there’s always going to be some daredevil trying to navigate the roads no matter how bad the weather gets. Yesterday, the Mayor’s office sent out an alert [9] saying that “The public is urged to avoid all unnecessary driving during the duration of the storm and, until further directed, to use public transportation wherever possible.” We understand that some people simply need to drive whether it be to make a living or to get somewhere but before you get behind the wheel later just consider the fact that if you do get stuck in the snow, or worse yet, into an accident, you’ll be inconveniencing and risking the lives of the city workers who’ll have to come and rescue you. So if you can, just use the subway or try to stay home.

TRAINS ARE RUNNING BUT TRY TO GO HOME EARLY

While the MTA is up and running (see the latest updates on that here [10]), “forecasts for accumulating snow may…require NYC Transit to shift the storage locations to subway cars indoors along underground express tracks. That means some express service will operate on the local tracks, while some lines will end earlier than normal this evening. Bus service is currently operating on a regular weekday schedule. As the storm progresses, service will be monitored on a route by route basis, and may be curtailed as conditions warrant.” So if you can, try to see if your boss will let you out of work a bit early or possibly even work from home today.

Update as of 11:40AM 2/8/2013: Amtrak will be suspending northbound service out of Penn Station starting at 12:30PM. For times and lines impacted, visit http://bit.ly/YfmLfc [11]

BEETS ON THE STREETS?

On a lighter note, there is a possibility that you could see some magenta on the roads today if NY decides to implement the beet juice [12]de-icing they’ve been testing out. We contacted the DOT this morning to see if any beets will be on the streets today and will keep you updated when we hear back.

ALTERNATE SIDE PARKING SUSPENDED

The city has advised that alternate side parking [14] will be suspended citywide through Sunday.

STOCK UP ON FOOD AND MEDS

Another no-brainer, but if you have some time right now, go out and get any medications you might need as well as some basic pantry items, batteries, etc. Like we mentioned, the storm doesn’t seem dire at this point but like the NY Lottery motto says, hey, you never know.

WHY NEMO?

Last but not least, you may be wondering about the name Nemo. The Weather Channel cites that the name has nothing to do with the Disney fish and instead refers to the both Greek boy’s name meaning “from the valley” and the word for “nobody” in Latin. We’re not sure that really explains anything about the naming process, but this NY Times article [15] sheds a little more light on the choice, with some words from Weather Channel meteorologist Bryan Norcross, who adds that Captain Nemo from “Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea” was also part of the moniker selection process.

We hope everyone stays safe and warm this weekend. See you on Monday!
