This is one day of the year when it might actually be dangerous to run after an ice cream truck , so why not make your own frosty treats in your own home? From scrumptious homemade popsicles in any flavor you like to organic lemon ice cream sandwiches (mmm…), check out our easy DIY tutorials to see how to make these right now.
NYC offers many gorgeous outdoor pools to help you beat the heat from the beautiful new McCarren Pool (though you might want to bring some pepper spray ) to this pop-up pool and beach at Brooklyn Bridge Park.
Movie theaters have long been a summer escape for urbanites and for good reason – they’re nice and cold inside! Our suggestions for a cool flick to catch? In the 100 degree weather, doesn’t Snow White and the Huntsman sound like an amazingly apropos choice?
Use this balmy weather as an excuse to act like a kid again and frolic in some sprinklers! The city offers a myriad of them (chances are pretty good that at least one of your local parks has one), but there are some really spectacular water features that you might want to travel a little further to get to. For example, the Ancient Playground at Central Park is a top pick for its Egypt-inspired design. Rumor is that the Brangelina bunch likes to horse around at the Catbird Playground, a water feature located at the Cark Shurz Park . for those of you lower downtown who want a view to splash around to, the Teardrop Park at Battery Park City is about as close to a real beach you can get without visiting Coney Island and boasts ten water-spraying mini geysers.
Those lions outside of the New York Public Library might be burning up, but inside it’s nice and cool. Stay out of the scorching sun and get your read on at the same time by visiting your local library. Here’s a list of our favorite ones in NYC .
Beat the heat and catch up on your culture by visiting a great summer exhibit at one of NYC’s world-renowned museums. Need some suggestions? The Foreclosed: Rehousing the American Dream exhibition at MoMa PS1 explores new architectural possibilities for cities and suburbs in the aftermath of the recent foreclosure crisis. Another exhibit that sounds fascinating is Klara Lidén’s Bodies of Society at the New Museum, showcasing sculptural hideaways made of scavenged materials in unexpected places.
