‘Abnormal Operating Procedures’ in Effect at Indian Point Nuclear Plant, No Damage Found

Despite housing America’s most unstable and dangerous nuclear reactor, the Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant has no reported damage after today’s 5.9 earthquake , epicentered in Virginia. A spokesman did however relay that Abnormal Operating Procedures have been put into effect - meaning that crews are currently inspecting the plant for damage. Minor shaking was felt at Indian Point, but no sirens or emergency indicators were activated, and the plant is still operating at full power.
Indian Point, like many nuclear plants, is not located near fault lines and was built to withstand a 6.0 earthquake. Because the epicenter of today’s earthquake was located several hundred miles away, the plant did not feel the full 5.9 magnitude shake . Officials at Indian Point also believe that the plant could withstand more than a magnitude 6.0.
Jerry Nappi, a spokesman for Indian Point, told the Daily Harrison , “Sirens are not necessarily an indication to evacuation, but to turn on your TVs and your radios and look for further instructions.” He added that, “In the control room, the seismic monitors didn’t register to a level that would need to shut down the plant.”
Indian Point does have a number of earthquake protections in place, including some for the spent fuel rods.
