The London-based architects of Adjaye Associates are expanding their already impressive portfolio by building their very first affordable housing project in New York City. The 13-story building will be the 7th housing project in Sugar Hill, Harlem, standing out with its mixed-use levels and green roof garden. Adjaye has teamed up with non-profit developers Broadway Housing Communities and local NY architects SLCE, to create a design that is not only chic and modern, but also an emblem of Harlem’s rich cultural history.
The Sugar Hill project will be located on Coogan’s Bluff above the Harlem river at West 155th street. It will house 124 families as well as a museum featuring the works of local artists. The building consists of two stacked concrete rectangles that are offset to reveal a mid-level terrace for occupant use. The concrete will be etched with an amazing floral motif to echo the historic ornamentation of the surrounding buildings. No two windows will be the same size.
The first floor is a wrap around, clear glazed level. This will house an education and arts center including the Faith Ringold Children’s Museum of Art and Storytelling. Lee H. Skolnick Architecture + Design Partnership is responsible for the museum’s interior design, which will include a performance space, gift shop, cafe, library, and daycare.
The green roof will serve not only as a relaxing leisure space for the building, but will also decrease the urban heat effect in New York, helping to keep our city cool during the hot summer months. Construction is set to begin this spring.
