It’s been ten days since Hurricane Sandy hit, and many New Yorkers and businesses are still without power . Although the recent nor’easter didn’t help matters, Governor Andrew Cuomo is not blaming the storm, but rather our utility infrastructure itself. Calling the current system out of date and designed for a 1950s market, the governor is holding companies like Con Ed, the Long Island Power Authority and National Grid responsible for being unprepared to operate properly after a storm like Sandy.
Cuomo’s accusations call for each of the utility companies to take it upon themselves to restore power to New Yorkers quickly and without the help of the state. Not only is the governor calling out the utility monopolies, but those that do not comply are being threatened with having their operating certificates revoked. The governor has already sent a letter to the CEO of each company that operates in New York, stating that he would take action against any company that does not make haste to meet the needs of New Yorkers during the post-Sandy power crisis .
Despite having restored power to most of New York, 285,000 homes and businesses are still without electricity after Sandy and this week’s nor’easter. The governor has found the Long Island Power Authority particularly at fault, after it left many of its customers still without power throughout the Hampton Bays and eastern end of Long Island.
Utilities companies are firing back, stating that the governor hasn’t expressed an interest before, and could have inspected facilities before a tragedy like Sandy hit. But regardless of who is to blame, Cuomo is taking the remaining power outages seriously, and cracking the whip on utility companies to make it their utmost priority.
