NYC’s yearly Canstruction competition is back after facing delays due to Hurricane Sandy! The can-tastic competition pits participants against one another to turn over 100,000 food cans into creative works of art like giant sneakers, NYC architectural icons and popular cartoon characters. The finished pieces will be open for public viewing from February 1-11, 2013, after which all of the cans will then be donated to City Harvest to help feed the city’s hungry and those affected by Hurricane Sandy.

Queens-based First World Trash uses recycled billboards and seatbelts to create fun bags and accessories that are not only durable, but also speak to our over-consumption of goods and materials. We first discovered FWT at the New York International Gift Fair and they recently shared their newest seasonal addition with us – a summer wine tote perfect for carrying bottles of vino to picnics in the park. The useful tote is made from repurposed vinyl billboards, bike inner tubes and discarded seatbelts, making it waterproof and able to withstand wear and tear.

With much talk about the forthcoming New York City Bike Share, the Department of Transportation (DOT) and Alta Bicycle Share have been giving sneak peaks of what’s to come. Inhabitat caught them at the Essex Street Market this past Saturday where representatives were on hand to answer questions about the program and show off the bike model. The bike share is predicted to launch this July and will bring an estimated 10,000 bikes and 600 stations conveniently located throughout the city.
