While many Americans are relieved that the country won’t go tumbling off the much ballyhooed fiscal cliff (yet, anyway) there are thousands for whom relief is nowhere in sight. This week, to the shock of many of his fellow Congresspeople, Speaker John Boehner announced that the House’s vote on a Hurricane Sandy relief bill would be postponed until the 113th Congress is sworn in on January 21st. For the residents of New York and New Jersey who are still struggling to recover from the devastating superstorm, the decision was the ultimate betrayal, and yet another sign that our wealthy elected officials are devoid of empathy for their constituents.

NYC’s first-ever LEED Gold restaurant will be opening in December – and somewhat surprisingly, it will be an Applebee’s. Up until now, the American chain eatery hasn’t exactly had a reputation that coincides with being green, healthy or sustainable, but hopefully having this new medal under their belt will change some of that. The new restaurant, which is currently under construction at 117th St. and Pleasant Ave. in Harlem is expected to open on December 10th.

The constant search for an outlet: It’s the one major drawbacks of all the mobile gadgets we love so much. If you’re lucky enough to live in the Big Apple, however, resuscitating your phone is about to become a whole lot easier with The Charge Cycle, a new project on Kickstarter that aims to put specialized stationary bikes on normal street corners. If the campaign is successful, all you’ll have to do to charge your phone is saddle up and start pedaling!

Hurricane Sandy has moved on after wreaking havoc on the East Coast and leaving several mid-Atlantic cities underwater. New York and New Jersey bore the brunt of Sandy’s fury and millions are now dealing with the dangerous consequences. In addition to being without power, millions in the Northeast now face another threat: the backed up municipal sewer system is spewing a toxic stew of raw sewage, industrial chemicals and floating debris into streets and neighborhoods.

The U.S. East Coast has been scrambling to prepare for Hurricane Sandy all weekend, and it seems that the storm’s effects are already showing in a severe way. Water levels have been rising in Brooklyn and Manhanttan today, and breaking reports say that Atlantic City is feeling some of the worst effects, with floodwaters already surging through the streets of this typically bustling tourist town.
