In the wake of last year’s Superstorm Sandy, and in preparation for an even more turbulent hurricane season, Mayor Bloomberg spoke today on safeguarding New York City from future climate change issues. Bloomberg proposed a mix of surge protecting measures, like flood walls, levees and dunes to keep unwanted water out during impending storms, in addition to providing funding for property owners to flood-proof their buildings.

Summer is just around the corner, and Brooklyn’s MetroTech campus has announced it will be hosting a program of free music, film and sports in Downtown Brooklyn. Activating the MetroTech Commons, Forest City Ratner Companies has curated the Summer@MetroTech series to invigorate the community during the warmer months. This year, they’ve partnered with Rooftop Films, World Science Festival, BEAT Festival and the City Parks Foundation to create another summer of fun for area residents and visitors.

New York City’s waterfront has been increasingly susceptible to flooding, super storms and rising tides, and the fragile support system of pilings (or wood and steel columns) holding up the city is in desperate need of repair. Rather than rebuilding the decaying wood and steel, which can be very expensive, the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) has chosen a rather unconventional solution to keep the city afloat – 3D printing. The city estimates that using 3D printing to reinforce the columns will save a whopping $2.9 billion in construction costs.

Brooklyn’s Aelfie Design Studio has made a business out of transforming old t-shirts into super-soft, one-of-a-kind rugs. Designed by Joedega, the colorful, hand-woven rugs and mats are recycled from dozens of shredded shirts. The unique mats can be found at Aelfie’s Bushwick showroom, along with a collection of vintage carpets and a friendly, in-store cat.

We’re looking forward to all that this weekend’s International Contemporary Furniture Fair will bring, and we just learned that the latest in home furnishings won’t be the only thing visitors can expect at the event. Showgoers who are interested in 3D printing technology will also be able to participate in DesignX‘s hands-on 3D printing workshops in a pop-up classroom at the fair. Over the course of four days, guests will be able to enroll in fifteen different reasonably-priced classes on cutting edge technology and design, including 3D printing, cloud collaboration and 3D design.

You might have known him as MCA of the Beastie Boys, but before he was a rapper Adam Yauch was just a happy Brooklyn kid playing at his favorite park. The late musician was honored last week when Palmetto Playground in Brooklyn Heights was renamed Adam Yauch Park in celebration of his popularity and influence as a rapper, filmmaker and activist. Yauch grew up hanging out at the Columbia Street playground, in the neighborhood that inspired one of the group’s most famous songs, “No Sleep ‘Til Brooklyn.”

The New Museum’s Ideas City Festival has hit the Bowery again, with a slew of art and culture events lined up for this weekend. This year’s festivities include artistic projections onto the museum’s façade, panel discussions on subjects like innovative technology, waste management and untapped capital, community recycling events, artist workshops and of course the street festival that takes place all day on Saturday. Pop down to the Bowery on Saturday and experience sustainable installations and booths by GrowNYC, #ArtsTech, Fieldwork, and a bunch of other great New York organizations.

Social media addicts rejoice! The MTA and Transit Wireless announced today that thirty more subway stations are now equipped with wireless voice and data service. Major hubs like Times Square, Lincoln Center and Columbus Circle are now online, joining the six stations in Chelsea that were given WiFi back in 2011. As of now, only T-Mobile and AT &T customers can enjoy the free access, but Verizon and Sprint are in negotiations to participate later this year.

The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art has changed extensively over the past few years, and this morning the school announced that after 150 years of offering a free education, it is planning to charge a tuition. The prestigious school is known mainly for two things – turning out industry giants like Daniel Libeskind, Milton Glaser and Alex Katz and being one of the last tuition-free colleges in the United States. But after two years of financial struggles and intense debate, the Union has decided to implement a “sliding scale” tuition starting in 2014.
