Bicyclists Angered as Citi Bike Stations Uproot Public Racks

NYC cyclists are standing their ground against the new Citi Bike share program’s attempt to rip up public bike racks and replace them with new branded stations. Last week, one group of Battery Park City riders found out that a bike rack on South End Avenue will be torn down to make way for one of the program’s new units. According to a sign, bike owners will have until May 5th to remove their property from the racks located right outside of the Gateway Plaza housing complex or risk losing their bikes.
“We think the Citi Share program is great,” said Manon Chevallerau to DNAInfo , a resident of Gateway for the past eight years. “But why on Earth would they take away our bike rack — it goes against the whole ethos of program [sic] I think. ”
Shelly Mossey, owner of cargo bike delivery company Urban Mobility Project isn’t a fan of the city bullying long-time cyclists into submission. Though he’s reached out to the long list of companies involved in the bike share and subsequent bike rack removal program, Mossey hasn’t received much response from the Department of Transportation, Citi Bike, Transportation Alternatives, The Battery Park City Authority , or Gateway Plaza. Mossey told Gothamist that he’s willing to get arrested to protect his bike rack if it comes to that.
According to DNAInfo , a DOT spokesman stated that the share stations are being installed at the request of the building property owner and are presently looking for an alternative location for the rack which is not a DOT rack. Despite protests and opposition, it doesn’t look as though the cyclists will get their way. Change is a comin’ whether they like it or not.
