New Yorkers have the advantage of being more green than the rest of the country without even realizing it, all thanks to our subway system. Starting this weekend, New Yorkers can experience a vintage taste of our beloved green transportation system [1]. As part of a promotion for the second season of HBO’s Boardwalk Empire, the MTA [2] is putting an original 1920s train back into circulation!

For four weekends in September from noon until 6pm, the vintage train [3] will run on the 2/3 line, but only making express stops at 96th, 72nd and Times Square. Before the MTA, the IRT (Interborough Rapid Transit) System ran the trains [4], starting in 1917. (You can still see the tiled signs for it in many stations, like at 14th and 6th).

The train [5] will have all the comforts of the 1920s — meaning no air conditioning. Instead, expect ceiling fans, prickly rattan benches, drop sash windows, and individual hanging holds for standing passengers.

Since the train is sponsored by 1920s Atlantic City themed Boardwalk [6] Empire, the train will be decked with period appropriate ads and art work inspired by the television show. But its not all advertisey! On the last weekend, coinciding with the debut of the first show of the season, Boardwalk Empire “brand ambassadors” will be handing out free MetroCards in Times Square [7] and 72nd street.

This is your chance to experience a slice of authentic old New York during the Prohibition Era. A concealed flask of bathtub gin is optional.
