Some great green news for NYC: The Brooklyn Navy Yard [1] has announced that it’s developing a massive green manufacturing center for the city. The Navy Yard currently houses over 275 (mostly non-military) businesses employing over 6000 people, but the demand for space there far outweighs the supply. The new Green Manufacturing Center, which is backed by a $46 million-dollar investment from the Brooklyn Navy Yard and support from both the New York State senate and Mayor Bloomberg [2], will create nearly 300 new permanent jobs and roughly 400 construction jobs.

The Center will be a LEED Silver-certified, adaptive-reuse project, using the concrete foundations and steel frames of three adjacent late-19th-century buildings that were originally used to build ships for the Navy. It will be at least partially powered by one of the largest solar power arrays in the state, and it won’t just be the building that’s green–the space is slated to house primarily green light manufacturing and clean-tech companies, along with a handful of colleges. The anchor tenants will be Crye Precision [4], a company that makes combat apparel for the military, and real estate developer Macro Sea [5], of local dumpster-pool fame.

Other recent green developments at the Navy Yard include the installation of over 90 wind/solar street lamps, the installation of several new bike racks and painting of new bike lanes, and the installation of the first permanent building-mounted array of wind turbines in the city on the roof of the Yard’s Perry Avenue Building, which is on track for LEED Gold certification.
