Kickstarter’s New Greenpoint, Brooklyn Headquarters Will Boast a Green Roof and Glass-Lined Courtyard

We've had our eye on the construction of Kickstarter's Greenpoint, Brooklyn headquarters for quite some time now and were pleasantly surprised to find out that it will boast some pretty nifty sustainable features. The project, by Ole Sondresen Architects, is transforming the remains of the historic Eberhard Faber Pencil Co. factory into a new space for the crowd-funding start-up just a block away from the East River waterfront and Transmitter Park. As of now, the building still looks a lot like a brick shell, but Greenpointers recently unearthed some renderings from Ole Sondresen that show the architects' plan for a green roof, a library and a courtyard.

Skylights Dumbo is a Pavilion That Channels Light Pollution into a Star Map of New York

Visitors to Brooklyn’s Dumbo Arts Festival back in October experienced a sculptural installation that brought the night sky a little closer. Called Skylights Dumbo, the site-specific pavilion harnessed ambient light to cast constellations inside of it. Reusing the illumination coming from Brooklyn Bridge Park at night, the wooden sculpture created a star map of New York on the dome's ceiling.

Discarded Christmas Trees Hung Under BQE as Life-Size Pine Air Fresheners

Now that Christmas is over, the streets of New York are littered with sad, dried out Christmas trees. Wanting to do an installation with dead evergreens for some time, artist Michael Neff took inspiration from the stacks of trees on the streets of North Brooklyn and created a swaying, pine-scented public installation under the BQE at the highly trafficked intersection of Metropolitan Avenue and North 6th Street.

B2: World’s Tallest Modular Tower and First Residential Atlantic Yards Building to Break Ground Today

We recently wrote about how Brooklyn's upcoming Atlantic Yards development will boast the world's largest prefab tower, and now we're excited to report that the new building is set to break ground this morning. Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz, Forest City Enterprises President and Chief Executive Officer David LaRue, Forest City Ratner Companies Chairman and CEO Bruce Ratner, Building and Construction Trades Council of Greater New York President Gary LaBarbera, Skanska USA Building CEO William Flemming, and Bertha Lewis will be kicking off construction for the 32-story tower in just a few hours at 461 Dean St. in Brooklyn. Designed by SHoP Architects, the building will be made up of prefab pieces that will be made right in a Brooklyn Navy Yard factory. We're hoping that once it's up, this new modular technology will spread across New York and become the cheaper, easier, and more sustainable future of city construction.

NYC Swapping Wooden Boardwalks with Concrete Version That Could Stand Up Better to Hurricanes

NYC Swapping Wooden Boardwalks with Concrete Version That Could Stand Up Better to Hurricanes

When Hurricane Sandy hit the New York region last month, some of the most heart-wrenching images to surface were those of the mangled boardwalks that had characterized beautiful beachfront communities like Coney Island for the past century. Discussions about rebuilding these waterfront pathways in the New York and New Jersey area are picking up, and, as predicted, the big questions are all about new materials. After the storm passed and sanitation workers began to clear wood-strewn streets, it became clear that polymer-based and concrete sections of the boardwalks had held up better to the elements than their wooden counterparts. Now, in light of that observation, Mayor Bloomberg has decided that going forward, New York will rebuild with these new plastic and concrete boardwalk materials. It seems that the days of the wooden boardwalk are over in NYC.

After superstorm Sandy left the NYC subway system in shambles, the MTA has been considering a number of options to prevent mass transit damage in future storms. So far, innovations like flood gates that seal subway entrances and giant balloons that inflate to block underground tunnels are at the top of their list. In a recent press conference, New York City Transit president Thomas Prendergast informed New Yorkers that the MTA is weighing several measures - from better sand bagging to adding more pump trains and protective gear - to create a viable plan for the future.
