Japanese Artist Carves Two Ton Marble Map of Manhattan

Japanese artist Yutaka Sone has constructed quite possibly the heaviest, and surely most expensive, map of Manhattan. Carved from a block of white marble, “Little Manhattan (2007-09)” depicts the entire island and its connecting bridges. The gorgeous relief is part of an exhibition opening on September 20th at David Zwirner Gallery in Chelsea.

Invisible Dog Art Center

When Lucien Zayan rented the building at 51 Bergen St. in Boerum Hill in 2009, the three-story factory was falling apart and filled with junk. In less than a year, Zayan, who moved to New York from France to start the center, transformed the building into The Invisible Dog Art Center with two exhibition spaces and twenty-five artists studios. The center puts on about a dozen shows per year, with exhibitors ranging from emerging local artists to established European artists.

From 1970 to 1995, the building functioned as a belt factory. The company’s claim to fame came in the late ’70s with the invention of the invisible dog leash, which Zayan named the art center after. When factory operations shut down, the materials remained and collected dust for over a decade. Now the belts, buckles, and beads have found their way into the artwork of many artists in residency. Zayan replaced and renovated essential parts of the building, but left most of the interior raw, allowing for artists and organizations to design their own exhibition space.

The center has grown into a community space with different groups offering workshops, performances, and parties nearly every day of the week.

Their small Lower East Side space is part of the new trend of art galleries popping up in the area, away from Chelsea.

Mallick Williams and Co. is a brand new contemporary art gallery, opened in late 2010. Headed by director Jeremy Kaplan, (formerly the director of Shepard Fairey’s Subliminal Projects in L.A.), Mallick Williams seeks to take the pretension out of the art world, and to encourage dialogue between artists, exhibitions and visitors. Their ambitious beginnings include shows featuring Retna, Dennis Hopper, Richard Duardo, Shepard Fairey, Eric Haze and Tobias Keene.

Honey Space

Started by artist Thomas Beale (who makes beautiful wooden sculptures and installations) in 2008, Honey Space is an independent exhibition space dedicated to presenting compelling work by contemporary artists in a non-commercial setting. Set on the edge of the Chelsea Gallery District in a former warehouse that has intentionally been left raw, Honey Space presents exhibitions that are site-specific and designed so the space can operate without any staff. Metal security gates open in the morning, go down at night, and throughout the day the space is open to the public.

Pierogi Gallery

Pierogi Gallery is a Williamsburg pioneer, opening its doors in 1994, when the neighborhood had little more than Rosemarie’s Greenpoint Tavern. Still an artist- run gallery, they have monthly solo shows, and are famed for their flat files, an archive of artists’ portfolios which are available for public consumption.

Pierogi also just opened a second exhibition space, called The Boiler (as it is a boiler room) in 2009. It is located at 191 N. 14th St. Brooklyn, open Noon to 6pm, Thursday through Sunday and by appointment.

The Hole

Very new to New York (he moved from Philly to Chelsea in 2008), Joshua Liner Gallery has grown up fast. Starting with a mostly street art flavor, Liner has quickly found his voice, showing artists who incorporate new media technology, mixed-media sculpture, and collective models of production. Liner has had some exhibitions that are out of the ordinary, like a like Skype “confessional” booth with Ryan McGuinness, and a viking parade of art for Dennis McNett’s opening.

Time Landscape

Time Landscape is not a gallery, but a public art work example of the Earth/Land Art movement. Created in 1978 by Alan Sonfist, the garden here is a miniature forest of Manhattan vegetation from the 16th Century – the indigenous vegetation before the big bad city came along. You cannot go in, but you can walk the perimeter, and let your mind blur out the cars for a moment to imagine Manhattan as the forest it once was.

Wave Hill

Wave Hill is technically in New York City, but feels miles and miles away. The 28 acre public garden and cultural center is host to green houses, art classes, exhibitions, writing classes, crafting and gardening. The Visual Arts Program presents artworks in the galleries and on the grounds that engage the public in a dialogue with nature, culture and site. Wandering around Wave Hill is a great way to spend a warm afternoon.

Sculpture Center

Started in 1928 as the Clay Club, the Sculpture Center relocated to a sprawling Long Island City location, and celebrates all things sculpture. Their exhibitions are often comprised from sustainable and recycled materials, such as Ursula von Rydingsvard’s redwood tree sculptures, land artist Maya Lin’s installations, and Ann Sperry’s recycled and found objects. It is near a cluster of newly opened Long Island City galleries, and MoMA PS1.

Feldman shows a handful of environmental artists, such as Tavares Strachan, who incorporates solar panels into his pieces; as well as The Harrisons, who are among the leading pioneers of the eco-art movement. Aside from exhibitions, Feldman also hosts artists panel discussions and events.
