The New York Aquarium in Coney Island will be partially up and running come late spring, after months of rebuilding from the mighty blow of Hurricane Sandy. The storm caused roughly $65 million in damages and left devastating realities for the aquarium; many of its fish were found dead, and knocked out backup power made it impossible for staff members to check on exhibits for days. Plans to expand the site with a focus on floodproofing are in the works.

While other youngsters spent the summer playing video games, the kids in Greenpoint’s SYSTEM program (Summer Youth in Science Technology Engineering and Math) were able to accomplish a feat most adults have never even tried – building a vertical garden farm from scratch. The industrious teens were led by Solar One educator Joe Chavez as part of a summer educational internship sponsored by the Greenpoint YMCA, the NYU Wallerstein Collaborative and ExxonMobil, and learned how to build a flourishing urban farm for the space-strapped Lentol Garden in their Brooklyn neighborhood. Students worked to maximize growing space in a small area, creating a thriving home for enthusiastic climbers like strawberries, mint, basil and flowering perennials.

The city of New York has agreed to provide a whopping $5 million in cash to the High Line Park, which is scheduled to begin construction on its third (and final) half-mile section in the near future. The capital injection will definitely come in handy but many are baffled as to why such a small (6.73 acre) and already well-funded park would lay claim to so much of the budget which allots a total of $105 million to New York City’s 142 park projects.

NYC’s enormously popular High Line Park is almost complete. The final 0.58-mile portion of the formerly abandoned railway line making up the elevated Chelsea park was donated by CSX Transportation in early July under the Rails-to-Trails Program, and the elevated NYC park is on track to be opened to the public in 2014.

Beach 30 Pavilion, the latest in a series of structures meant to rejuvenate the Far Rockaways, was unveiled last week, and we couldn’t help but admire its unique, wave-like form. Designed by WXY Architecture and landscape designers Quennell Rothschild and Partners, LLP, the structure serves as a comfort and park maintenance station as well as an outdoor classroom. The new pavilion draws heavily from its beachfront surroundings, and features sea-glass greens, ample light and a decidedly postmodernist, Palm Springs feel.

But trees need plenty of TLC, and for years many of them were neglected as the city extended the city’s pruning rotation from every seven years to 15 years for each tree. Luckily all of that is now changing as the City Council announced last week that it has added $2 million to NYC’s tree care budget.

Great news! The MillionTreesNYC Project, which is one of 132 PlaNYC initiatives to green up the city, has already surpassed the halfway point in its grand goal of planting one million trees within the span of a decade. Launched in 2007 as a partnership between the city and Harlem resident Bette Midler’s New York Restoration Project, the initiative aims to plant one million new trees in New York City to increase the city’s forestation by a whopping 20% and improve air quality as well as quality of life in general for city residents.

Humans aren’t the only ones finding new green jobs in NYC. Freshkills Park in Staten Island recently hired a bunch of goats to help clean up the former landfill by eating away weeds. It turns out that city officials needed some help with a plan to transform the land into New York City’s first large park planned in over 100 years, so they are paying the goats (or rather their herder) $3,400 per week to clear away some stubborn invasive species that conventional methods had failed to eradicate.

Great news for LowLine fans – this week, The Delancey Underground won the support of Manhattan’s Community Board 3, bringing the underground park even closer to coming to fruition. The plan to transform an abandoned underground trolley terminal under Delancey and Essex streets into vibrant public space seemed like a pipe dream when it first started but with the backing of community groups and now CB3, the project is pushing forward full steam ahead.

If you’ve been reading Inhabitat you probably know that we’re rooting for the Delancey Underground’s ambitious plan to build a subterranean public park on the Lower East Side. Called the “LowLine,” the underground park would add to the city’s amazing network of open spaces from the High Line to the proposed Waterfront Park in Brooklyn. But in order for what is currently an empty underground trolley terminal to become the Delancey LowLine, they need to raise funds. To that end, the Delancey Underground project is in the midst of a 75 day fundraising drive to raise $75,000. An anonymous donor has promised to write a check for $75,000 if other contributors can raise an equal amount of cash for the LowLine Summer Challenge by August 15. The $150,000 would be a huge boost to a project that has already scored the support of local businesses, community leaders and residents.

Last week, a disgruntled Chelsea resident posted fliers along the High Line Park begging tourists who visit the area to check their manners. The posters, most of which were torn down by other Chelsea residents, complained about visitors “trampling” and “taking pictures.” Naturally, most native New Yorkers guffawed at the condescending posters and replied via Facebook and blog comments that they don’t share the views of this one unhappy camper.

While many New Yorkers don’t even know of its existence, the Queens Botanical Garden‘s Visitor & Administration Building, designed by Manhattan-based BKSK Architects is one of the most accessible (not to mention absolutely lovely) examples of eco architecture right in the city’s back yard. And if you’ve never seen a solar roof in action, witnessed rainwater harvesting or walked upon a green roof, you can do all three right there (for free on Sundays and Wednesdays after 4PM, and just $4 during normal operating hours). And while you’re at it, stroll through some of the 27 other blooming paths, flowerbeds and oases, learn about herb gardening and composting or enjoy a picnic on one of the grassy knolls.

An unfortunate consequence of living in an urban environment is that city folk tend to forget about nature. But for a group of field biologists working with the city parks department, New York City offers some of the most interesting and diverse environmental curiosities. As it turns out, our urban setting has a unique impact on the evolution of plants and wildlife within the city limits. Scouring our city parks, the team, led by Dr. Jason Munshi-South, is uncovering details of some of the interesting biological changes the city brings to its wildlife and animal residents.

The Manhattan skyline is still visible through the haze, but you’ll feel a world away when you’re standing in the middle of the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. The refuge is a peaceful natural habitat spread out over 9,155 acres and dozens of little islets, but only the areas called the East and West Ponds are open to the public — the rest is reserved for natural wildlife. More than 335 species of birds and dozens of other animals live in the refuge, which lies between Brooklyn and Queens near Broad Channel and Far Rockaway. Two paths take visitors around the salt marshes and dense woods, home to thousands of migrating ducks and geese. Be sure to bring your bug spray because the mosquitos and horseflies can be vicious.

The recently built eco-friendly visitors center houses exhibits highlighting the Jamaica Bay’s features, and park rangers are always on hand to answer questions. Guided tours are offered year round.

The 250-acre site of the New York Botanical Garden is a historic landmark, home to an incredible natural landscape of hills, valleys, and the Bronx River gorge. The planned gardens and planted collections were designed to accentuate and complement the landscape and native plant life. The Garden offers a widely regarded education and research program through its International Plant Science Center, and curates stunningly beautiful displays like the Caribbean Garden and the orchid show in its greenhouses. Since its inception, the Garden has been steadfast in its devotion to sustainability and eco-friendly practices. It uses energy efficient lighting, motors and other equipment, and it has reduced its carbon emissions and increased recycling. The Garden also hosts a composting program and an outreach program to help green the Bronx.
