An entry in Tablet Hotel’s Rethink Hotels competition, the Allotment is a totally new concept in hospitality: A hotel centered around food, rather than sleep. Dreamed up by Dean Moran, the prospective NYC hotel is all about the process of growing, selling and cooking fresh food, while also giving guests the opportunity to engage in the process. The proposal also calls for cultivating farm fresh produce in and on the hotel itself!

The new outpost of popular LIC eatery M. Wells opened this past week at MoMA PS 1, but not to the warm welcome it was hoping for. Instead, the restaurant has drawn the ire of many animal lovers due to one very unusual item on its menu – raw horse meat. M. Wells planned to sell horse meat tartare as a specialty item on their French Canadian-inspired menu, but an online petition and planned protest organized by horrified vegetarians and meat-eaters alike have convinced them to “hold off” for now.

A new watering hole called the Molecule Cafe has opened up in New York’s East Village, and it serves only one thing – NYC tap water. Considering that the cafe gets the water for free, filters it and then sells for $2.50 a bottle, you might feel like you’re being swindled but the owners say that their water has added benefits worth splurging on. Called ‘Water 2.0′, the special H2O is purified of chlorine, fluoride and compound metals with the help of an 8-foot, seven-step, $25,000 machine that incorporates ozone treatments, ultraviolet rays, and reverse osmosis.

Luckily, Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Speaker Christine Quinn have announced a new program that will change that and give less wealthy NYCers on food stamps a healthful break for both their wallets and kitchens. The program will reward shoppers who use food stamps at the city’s 138 farmers markets by giving them coupons for free produce.

Cupcake lovers in Manhattan will be happy to hear that their sugar cravings can soon be satisfied 24 hours a day with new cupcake ATMs by Sprinkles Cupcakes. Set to be installed around Manhattan by this summer, the ATMs will dispense the irresistible treats all wrapped up in boxes and bags made from recycled materials. While their green attempt gets a thumbs up, we’re still left wondering if encouraging sugary snacking is a good idea. These delicious icing-topped cakes are a fun indulgence now and again, but not so much at one’s beck and call. With obesity levels and dietary illnesses as severe as they are today, it would be better to see ATMs like these stocked with healthier alternatives instead.

Mast Brothers Chocolates operates in a 3,000 square-foot bean-to-bar factory in Williamsburg. Run by three brothers, the company crafts rich, single origin chocolate treats that are at least 70 percent cacao and reflect the brothers’ tastes. The chocolate bars come in beautifully designed paper wrappers, and there are about 10 flavors ranging from chocolate with almonds and sea salt to dried cranberries to salt and pepper. An in-house pastry chef constantly whips up new sweet treats for guests to try. All of their cacao comes from small farms in Ecuador, Madagascar, Venezuela, and the Dominican Republic. Recently, the brothers sailed to the DR to learn more about their farmers and form a deeper relationship.

You can find Mast Brothers Chocolate at various locations throughout the city or you can purchase treats directly from their website.

Dun-Well Doughnuts is a premier vegan donut shop, complete with gourmet flavors, fresh coffee, bowtied workers, and jazz music. A step into the Dun-Well Shop is a step back in time. The walls are clad in vintage baking advertisements, recipes and sheet music. Edison lightbulb fixtures hang from the vintage textured tin ceiling, old seltzer bottles and baking tins decorate the back wall, and 1920s-jazz croons over the speakers. You can enjoy their coffee and donuts in-store, while checking your email with the free wifi.

Dun-Well’s donuts are not just for breakfast, but instead a gourmet dessert. Flavors like French toast, almond coco joy, green tea & ginger, chocolate candy cane, and s’mores cozy up with traditional flavors like Boston cream, jelly-filled, and classic glaze. The cast of flavors change daily, for new and exciting offerings to try. Any of the sweet flavors can be topped with a scoop of Lula’s vegan ice cream, for a decadent donut sundae.

O CAFE philosophy focuses on the production of high quality coffee accompanied by high quality service. The cafe’s values are rooted in ecologically responsible practices, supporting fair trade and sustainable agriculture. They recognize that our coffee is the result of both people and ecosystems and foster close relationships with our growers. O CAFE also offers Brazilian sweets and snacks, such as pão de queijo, pão de mel, and açaí.

O CAFE’s store interior is designed with reclaimed wood, as well as leftover wood from its furniture’s construction; any paint used is VOC-free. Most of the lighting in the store uses LED bulbs. Ninety percent of the garbage produced at O CAFE is composted, and 70% of its equipment is Energy Star rated.

Born at the Hester Street Fair in 2010, La Newyorkina serves up delicious all-natural Mexican flavored ice pops call paletas, a traditional sweet sold at Mexican ice cream shops. Using the best fruit summer has to offer, La Newyorkina creates unique flavors like mango-chile, avocado, hibiscus, tamarind, corn, and coconut. All of the ingredients are 100% natural and artisanal, with no added sweeteners or artificial coloring. Plus, they make small pops for kids and big pops for adults! In summer 2011, they expanded their treats to include aguas frescas, and in the fall, they began making pan de muerto, sweet tamales, hot chocolate and Mexican fruit punch for the cooler weather. You can find them every week at the Hester Street Fair and daily on the High Line. Follow them on Twitter to find out where they are.
