The Children’s Museum of Manhattan is more than a museum — it is a destination and resource where families of all backgrounds come to learn, play and grow together. The museum focuses on four specific areas: early childhood education, creativity in the arts and sciences, healthy lifestyles, and exploration of world cultures. The museum’s themed exhibits offer an interactive experience with something to please all ages. PlayWorks is an entire floor dedicated to preschoolers, while God, Myths, and Mortals lets visitors explore ancient Greece. In addition to the permanent exhibits, more than 80 workshops and performances are offered each week.

The Brooklyn Children’s Museum has been enriching children’s lives for more than 110 years. They host a variety of art and science exhibits, events, and educational programs that challenge children to learn about themselves, others, and the world around them. A couple years ago, the museum under went an $80 million dollar eco-renovation that doubled its size and qualified for LEED certification — it was the first green museum in New York City. The museum uses a geothermal heating and cooling system, solar power electricity, daylight sensors, and renewable and recycled materials in finishes and furniture, plus many more eco-features.

Public transportation is one of the greenest ways to get around the city. At the New York Transit Museum — housed in a repurposed historic IND subway station — you can learn all about New York’s transportation history through the museum’s rich collections of photographs, maps, drawings, documents, and other ephemera. It is the largest museum in the United States devoted to urban public transportation history, and one of the premier institutions of its kind in the world. The museum explores the development of the greater New York Metropolitan region through the presentations of exhibitions, tours, educational programs, and workshops dealing with the cultural, social, and technological history of public transportation. Since it’s inception over a quarter century ago, the museum has grown in scope and popularity.

The New York City Fire Museum houses one of the nation’s most prominent collections of fire related art and artifacts from the late 18th Century to the present. In its collection, you’ll find painted leather buckets, helmets, parade hats and belts, lanterns and tools, pre-Civil War hand pumped fire engines, horse drawn vehicles, and early motorized apparatus. Even the building is historic — it’s located in a renovated 1904 firehouse.

The mission of the Children’s Museum of the Arts is to extend the benefits of the arts to all children and their communities and to secure the future of the arts by inspiring and championing the next generation of artists and art lovers. They provide authentic hands-on art experiences for children with artists, both in our art-filled interactive museum, in the community, and by collecting and exhibiting children’s art.

Exhibitions at the Children’s Museum of the Arts are designed to encourage conversation between museum visitors young and old alike. Each exhibition is selected to inspire children and their families in their art-making at CMA and to foster a safe environment for children to express themselves freely. CMA maintains a collection of over 2,000 pieces of art made by children from 50 different countries, dating back to the 1930′s.

They host summer arts camps in Soho and on Governor’s Island, along with classes throughout the year held at the museum.
