West Thames Park

Community gardens located in West Thames Park in Battery Park City are available on a first come, first served basis. The park also contains a children’s playground, and a lawn to play on. The park was renovated last year to include water features and a sandlot for younger kids. There are also a few ball fields to play sports.

Explore exciting new and permanent exhibits in a dynamic, state-of the art facility that brings technology and creativity together to make learning experiential, entertaining and fun. Permanent exhibits include a sensi-tile wall created with a special material that creates unique reflections in response to the visitor’s touch; an evolutionary technology timeline; virtual surgery stations where visitors can experience what it feels like to perform open heart surgery; and a robot zone. The fun never ends!

The Art Farm in the City

The Art Farm in the City is an eco-friendly and organic facility which teaches your children about nature, animals and how to better care for the planet. They have a USDA licensed, indoor petting zoo with a wide variety of animals including bunnies, chinchillas, guinea pigs, lizards, turtles, birds, tropical fish and sometimes even pigs, chickens, goats and sheep!

During the summer, the Art Farm in the City provides day camps for kids between the ages of three and eight. Kids are divided into three groups by age range. The camp takes place in the eco-friendly facility, but not all of their programs focus on green. Check out the “nature week” camp for the most sustainable option.

They also offer a 10 percent discount for siblings, and for every dollar that you spend at the The Art Farm, they make a donation to Mari’s Children, a non-profit organization that helps children all over the world.

Playgarden is a year round indoor play space made entirely of recycled playground material. The space is cleaned daily with non-toxic and organic cleaning supplies to keep your child safe. Memberships are available for year round unlimited visits. They also have a drop off program for pre-preschool aged children taught by Montessori certified instructors where children learn to be eco-friendly through recycling education and energy and water conservation practices.

One-night Family Campout

Written up in New York Times as a little known secret about New York, the NYC Parks and Recreation one-night campouts can be a barrel of fun. You bring the sleeping bag, they bring everything else–for free. Seriously, they feed you, provide a tent and activities. The campout rotates around the five boroughs from late spring and into early fall. It’s little secrets like this that make New York so great.
