LUMEN is not a traditional film festival or gallery art experience. It is a one-day, 6-hour festival that features video and performance art by emerging artists and more established artists at the forefront of their media. LUMEN begins before the sun sets and continues until midnight. Videos, performances, and installations occur simultaneously. There is no “main stage” or center focus, instead visitors are invited to safely and organically discover art scattered throughout the site. LUMEN 2013 will be held at Lyons Pool, a publicly-owned NYC Department of Parks and Recreation site that is named after Joseph H. Lyons.

It illustrates how growth is disrupted by invasive species. The exhibit is on display at the Visitor & Administration Building Gallery from April 22 through July 22.

Join the artist behind WASTED for a special reception and see this wonderful exhibition on its closing day. Resobox Gallery proudly presents political works from Alex White Mazzarella, artist and Founder of global social art initiative Artefacting. Artwork created over three years in the distant geographies of Mumbai, Detroit, Brooklyn and Queens come together to explore WASTED as a landscape, social condition and way of life.

Featured is “A Working Class” (2013), an installation consisting of 122 plastic liquor, beverage and oil containers. Accompanying the work are 22 mixed-media paintings and a short video. Expressive paintings from 2010-11 narrate stories of development and nature urban juxtaposition through a language of collage, imagery, through the intensity of color and velocity of paint and pastel.

2011 works from Mumbai utilize photo transfer and emulsion to depict imagery like oil drums as loot. Barrels as shadow populations are surveyed behind bars and Detroiters are combined with abandoned rubber tires. In a 2011 performance video a Computer Man is the story of electronics once their owners deem them obsolete.

What is wasted? What is not wasted? What can’t be wasted? Why do we get wasted?

Free Admission. Everyone is invited.

Shoppers at the Bronson van Wyck holiday pop-up shop will delight in a truly one-of-a-kind space that Bronson has masterfully transformed for the holiday season. Sophisticated yet whimsical, Bronson drew inspiration from his holidays at home growing up on his family’s farm in Arkansas and his travels around the world, all of which is reflected in the design of the space. The pop-up shop marks the first time ever Bronson’s exclusive holiday décor (garland, wreathes, tress, among others) and product (cocktail mixes and salad dressings) have been available for retail. Also for sale in the store are unique vintage finds, antiques and bespoke holiday decorations, gifts and accessories, all of which have been curated by Bronson.

SculptureCenter is pleased to announce Winter Workshop: The Art of the Gift, the first in a series of activity-based family programs led by contemporary artists. Just in time for the holidays, this unique event will focus on the spirit of gift-exchange. Artist Gina Beavers will direct workshops where youths (or the young-at-heart!) can create a variety of sculptural gifts. Artist Kim Holleman will instruct participants on how to create miniature worlds inside of glass-jar terrariums, artist Leah Wolff will lead a ceramics workshop, and other guest artists will host a sprawling handmade wrapping-paper station. Adding to the seasonal cheer, cookies and hot chocolate will be provided courtesy of Sage General Store. All are welcome; but recommended for ages 4-12. Parents and caregivers are required to stay with their children and are encouraged to create along with them.

$15 per child for non-members
$10 per child for SculptureCenter members

Admission is for children only and includes materials for the Winter Workshop.

Space is limited so please register in advance by purchasing tickets at Sculpture-Center.org
