Celebrities, the fashion elite, and media will gather to celebrate the future of fashion at FASHION LOVES ANIMALS, a benefit fashion show and cocktail party, on May 4 at SIR Stage 37 in New York City. This stylish night benefiting Farm Sanctuary will honor VAUTE Couture President and Creative Director Leanne Mai-ly Hilgart, who made history this year with the first all-vegan label to show at New York Fashion Week. An Evening with The NY Times’ Mark Bittman to Benefit the Brooklyn Food Coalition

Please join the Brooklyn Food Coalition for an exciting fundraiser featuring New York Times cooking and food policy writer Mark Bittman on Tuesday April 30th in downtown Brooklyn! Coinciding with the release of his new book “VB6: Eat Vegan Before 6:00 p.m. to Lose Weight and Restore Your Health…For Good”, Mr. Bittman will speak on “The Future of Food” and will address how we can eat for the health of our bodies and the planet.

Tickets are $20; there will be a limited amount of student tickets for $10. A VIP Dinner will follow the talk: $175 VIP Dinner tickets include a 4-course meal, wine, a signed copy of Mr. Bittman’s new book, and entry to the talk. Doors open at 5 pm and the talk will go from 6-7:30 p.m. Bittman will be signing copies of his new book and there will be a raffle for the complete works of Bittman along with snacks, aprons and other merchandise. Queens Botanical garden hosts a free edible gardening course designed to teach the best organic techniques for growing vegetables safely and effectively, particularly in urban settings. This course, offered (on Thursdays 4/4 -5/9) to those who can pass on the information to others in their communities, is offered in three locations through a collaboration between Bronx Green-Up of the NYBG, Just Food and QBG. The EVCC highlights retail diversity in the East Village with a comprehensive free guide to retail and services in the neighborhood. The Lower East Side Ecology Center’s EcoBizNYC program helps small businesses in the East Village and Lower East Side reduce air pollution and environmental impacts, and awards sustainability grants bi-annually.

Real Life Church Thanksgiving Dinner and Donation Drive

The Real Life Church in Hunts Point in the Bronx will be serving up a free Thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings this holiday, and volunteers are needed to help work the dinner from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.. In addition to the meal, guests will be able to “shop” for clothing donated by Dress for Success and NYC Clothing Bank. Volunteers are asked to donate personal care items as well. Donate a Bag of Food to Help Hurricane Sandy Victims

GrowNYC’s Donate-A-Bag initiative will be collecting food on Friday to help feed hungry New Yorkers, those affected by Hurricane Sandy and relief workers. They’re making it really simple for you to help – just purchase an extra bag of produce while you shop and bring it to the Market Information Tent.

So far, Greenmarket customers are donating harvest season items in record numbers in response to the immense need for hunger relief that Sandy created, over 10,000 pounds have found their way to community kitchens, churches, shelters, food pantries and others serving victims of the storm, so they thank you for your help!

Manhattan Country School Farm Festival

Head on over to the Manhattan Country School’s annual Farm Festival this weekend aims to experience a little bit of the Catskills in Harlem. The festival is for children ages 3 and up, and East 96th Street between Madison and Fifth Avenues will be turned into an urban carnival with rides, games, crafts, a silent auction, raffles and live music. There will also be homemade baked goods and a wide variety of delicious ethnic cuisine and fresh produce from the school’s farm in Roxbury, NY.

NY Department of Health Finds Lead Contamination in Locally-Sourced Eggs

New Yorkers may have more to worry about than their cholesterol when sitting down to their next plate of eggs. After testing eggs sourced from chickens in NYC neighborhood gardens, the New York State Department of Health found that many from Brooklyn, the Bronx and Queens contained detectable levels of lead. 28 of the 58 eggs tested contained lead in 10-74 parts per billion, with one example scoring 100 parts per billion. The findings are a wake-up call that while being a locavore is a healthy and sustainable lifestyle choice, New Yorkers still need to be careful how they keep their chickens and where they purchase their eggs.

Head on over to the SculptureCenter this Saturday for the first LIC Block Party ever! This fun and free event will feature artist-led activity tents, a stage with live music and interactive performances and a community-built, large-scale temporary sculpture as well as an Artist Vendor Market and a family-friendly local food court.

Tarot readings with Jesse van Buren, pom-pom making with Abby Walton and Travis Boyer, Cubist face painting with Stephanie Dodes, carnival games with Lior Shvil, discover your inner child with Jacques Louis Vidal, balloon activities with Ross Moreno and Justin Cooper, ask a lawyer with The Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts (VLA), Elastic City neighborhood walks with Ben Weber, wondrous disguises and costumes with HiChristina! and clean your pennies with the Clean Penny Service. Kim Holleman will bring an oasis on wheels with Trailer Park, a mobile public park and Free Style Art will lead block party guests in building a large-scale temporary sculpture inspired by the changing architectural landscape of Long Island City.

Artist Jennifer Sullivan will emcee a music and performance program featuring the all female mariachi group Mariachi Flor de Toloache, The Kate Bush Dance Troupe, Queens Jazz Overground, and Neal Medlyn, as well as a Fitness Intermission presented by the Long Island City YMCA. Take a break from the block party and participate in a Masala Bhangra Workout® dance routine that modernizes the high-energy folk dance of Bhangra with the exhilaration of Bollywood movies. Wind down with special late afternoon DJ sets by DJ JAR JAR WATTVR aka Jory Rabinovitz and Jesse Hlebo.
