Join in on this summetime scavenger hunt in Park Slope hosted by Foster Dogs NYC! Teams of 5-8 people will go from store-to-store, completing challenges and getting a clue of where to head next. It’s going to be fun and lighthearted event. The hunt starts and finishes at The Gate—which also happens to be dog-friendly!

Join the Gowanus Canal Conservancy at its second annual Winter Festival fundraiser, which will be a celebration of local food, beer and music on the Gowanus Canal. Food offerings will include hot dogs from Brooklyn Cured, kimchi from Mama Oh’s Kimchi and pickles from Brooklyn Brine as well as beer from Sixpoint Brewery. Listen to some great music while supporting a good cause at the OIDO benefit concert this weekend to raise funds for Williamsburg’s PS 84 Rooftop Hydroponic Greenhouse Classroom, a pioneering educational project to benefit the entire Williamsburg community. This experiment in sound and sculpture will feature Tunde Adebimpe (the lead singer of TV on the Radio) and sculpture and light artist, Ivan Navarro for a one-time only sound and sculpture performance unlike anything you’ve ever seen before.

Real Life Church Thanksgiving Dinner and Donation Drive

The Real Life Church in Hunts Point in the Bronx will be serving up a free Thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings this holiday, and volunteers are needed to help work the dinner from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.. In addition to the meal, guests will be able to “shop” for clothing donated by Dress for Success and NYC Clothing Bank. Volunteers are asked to donate personal care items as well. Donate a Bag of Food to Help Hurricane Sandy Victims

GrowNYC’s Donate-A-Bag initiative will be collecting food on Friday to help feed hungry New Yorkers, those affected by Hurricane Sandy and relief workers. They’re making it really simple for you to help – just purchase an extra bag of produce while you shop and bring it to the Market Information Tent.

So far, Greenmarket customers are donating harvest season items in record numbers in response to the immense need for hunger relief that Sandy created, over 10,000 pounds have found their way to community kitchens, churches, shelters, food pantries and others serving victims of the storm, so they thank you for your help!

Fridays DONATE-A-BAG events will be held at:

The Union Square Greenmarket from 8am-12:30pm

Join FABnyc as we bring together gently used materials of all sorts from arts organizations throughout the East Village/LES for a one of a kind re-use & repurposing event. Take home all the costumes, props, and furniture you need for your next artistic endeavor. The items you leave behind will be recycled by GrowNYC, WeRecycle! and the NYC Department of Sanitation.

Additionally, FABnyc is co-sponsoring a community e-waste and clothing recycling drop-off, open and free for everyone (11am-3pm). WeRecycle! will be on hand to accept your e-waste, and GrowNYC to accept your clothing and textiles. Visit our website for questions regarding what’s acceptable to drop-off.

Public Assembly is hosting an all-day event to benefit the continuing recovery efforts in Japan. A year ago, the nation was rocked by a massive earthquake and tsunami, and today, many are still in dire need of assistance. There will be art, dancing, live music, kids activities, and much more. Architects for Animals Design Shelters for Stray Cats Out of Recycled Materials

Each year, Architects for Animals hosts a benefit for New York’s stray animals, asking architects from the area to design innovative pet shelters from recycled materials. As part of the Giving Shelter benefit, the architects flex their design muscles by making quirky and fun structures that would function as both shelters and public art pieces in New York City streets. Proceeds from the fundraiser benefit the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals, and the designer shelters are given to a list of cat care givers to use during the winter season.

The Environment Action Association and HeyKorean present 2011 Holiday Green Swap.

What is it: Every participant brings in stuff they no longer use/need, in gently used condition, and trade it in for other gently used materials you may need. Not only does it save you money, but it also saves the environment from unnecessary waste.

Eligible items: Gently worn clothes/shoes, gently used accessories.
There is a 10 item limit and a suggested donation of $5 to $20. All items not traded will be donated to NYC Cares. Refreshments will be served.

The Gowanus Canal Conservancy, an environmental organization that advocates for the restoration and green development of the Gowanus Canal, is happy to announce its first annual Winter Festival fundraiser – a celebration of local food, beer and music on the Gowanus Canal in Build It Green! NYC’s new Gowanus space. There will be a delicious three-course meal and live music by local New York City bands. Proceeds from Winter Festival will directly benefit the Gowanus Canal Conservancy, specifically assisting with its Clean & Green Volunteer Program, Composting and Rain Garden projects.

Ticket prices are as follows:

+ $60.00: CONSERVANCY MEMBERSHIP – Music & Dinner ticket, plus a General membership in the Conservancy. A $15.00 Savings!!

Celebrate your local farmers and fisherman at the Blue Moon Bash, a day of music and food at Southpaw. The event costs $20 and all of proceeds will be donated to Ray Bradley of Bradley Farm and Kira Kinney of Evolutionary Organics for flood relief from Hurricane Irene and subsequent storms. The two neighboring farms were under as much as 6 feet of water, drowning 90-100% of crops intended to be harvested and sold during the most profitable months of the market year. Alex & Stephanie Villani of Blue Moon, who have sold alongside Ray’s and Kira’s stands at the Grand Army Plaza Greenmarket for over a decade, are organizing this fundraising effort, along with dedicated customers, to help their dear friends recover from these extreme losses. At the bash, you can enjoy Blue Moon clam chowder, great music from live bands, delicious local beer from Brooklyn Brewery, and tastings from local restaurants.
