Kids and families can pot a native wildflower to take home, make wildflower seed bombs, get their faces painted, make flower costumes and color native wildflowers that grow in Stuyvesant Cove Park. EARTH FEST @ Battery Urban Farm

The Battery Conservancy will hold EARTH FEST on Saturday, April 20 at Battery Urban Farm. Celebrate Earth Day at this family-friendly event, which will offer arts and crafts, site tours, workshops and educational games to celebrate and promote food, farming, and sustainability in NYC. Themed demonstrations and the unveiling of a new display garden will encourage visitors to feel empowered to create more green space in their own neighborhoods, while activities such as a community swap and compost relay races will inspire attendees to eat thoughtfully and reduce waste. An urban farming “Roof to Table” photography exhibit, farmer panel, live music, and Greenmarket-sourced refreshments will round out the event. More info here.

David d’Ostillio: The Chopping Block

Join David D’Ostilio at Open Source Gallery as he demonstrates his skills using old fashioned tools, a rite passed down to him by his grandfather. “The Chopping Block” is both an homage to his own past and a critique of perceived notions about gender roles. The artist will play the role of lumberjack, donning the stereotypical clothing, bringing in a 10-foot long log and sawing it into smaller pieces and then chop the stumps into firewood with an antique axe.

Sculpture Center: The Art of the Gift Winter Workshop with Artist Kim Holleman and More!

SculptureCenter is pleased to announce Winter Workshop: The Art of the Gift, the first in a series of activity-based family programs led by contemporary artists. Just in time for the holidays, this unique event will focus on the spirit of gift-exchange. Artist Gina Beavers will direct workshops where youths (or the young-at-heart!) can create a variety of sculptural gifts. Artist Kim Holleman will instruct participants on how to create miniature worlds inside of glass-jar terrariums, artist Leah Wolff will lead a ceramics workshop, and other guest artists will host a sprawling handmade wrapping-paper station. Adding to the seasonal cheer, cookies and hot chocolate will be provided courtesy of Sage General Store. All are welcome; but recommended for ages 4-12. Parents and caregivers are required to stay with their children and are encouraged to create along with them.

$15 per child for non-members
$10 per child for SculptureCenter members

Admission is for children only and includes materials for the Winter Workshop.

Canis Minor, a premier dog and cat boutique, invites pet owners and pet lovers alike to kick off Halloween in Jersey City’s Newport with the area’s 7th annual Pet Parade. Dress your furry best friend in the most creative costume you can dream up and get your camera ready for one of the can’t miss events of the season. There will be treats for both humans and pets to enjoy and a costume parade through Newport that’s wilder than the animal kingdom itself. Best-in-show and runner-up costumes will be selected and honored with exciting prizes.

The pet parade is open to all and FREE to enter or attend. In addition, 10% of sales that day at Canis Minor will be donated to Jersey City’s Liberty Humane Society.

If it ends up raining cats and dogs, plan to come on Sunday, Oct. 28. instead.

Manhattan Country School Farm Festival

Head on over to the Manhattan Country School’s annual Farm Festival this weekend aims to experience a little bit of the Catskills in Harlem. The festival is for children ages 3 and up, and East 96th Street between Madison and Fifth Avenues will be turned into an urban carnival with rides, games, crafts, a silent auction, raffles and live music. There will also be homemade baked goods and a wide variety of delicious ethnic cuisine and fresh produce from the school’s farm in Roxbury, NY.
