This Friday, May 17th the Design Management Chair Dr. Mary McBride will be guest moderator for a Material ConneXion Roundtable, Conversations With a Consequence: Designing for the Triple Bottom Line. As moderator she will be leading a discussion with the top industry leaders about the future of design. Mary’s model known as “The Triple Bottom Line by Design,” identifies the opportunity for design and designers to create value for their company’s profit margin through the creation of sustainable, environmentally sound, and socially beneficial services and products. Attendees are encouraged to submit topics they would like to discuss with the intent of hosting a discussion of relevance and impact.

These are the questions that Viral Voices: Global Discussions, an event hosted by the AIANY Global Dialogues Committee will explore with the help of speakers and panelists like Mark Wigley, Dean of the GSAPP at Columbia University, David Basulto and David Assael of ArchDaily, Carlo Aiello from eVolo, David Fano from CASE, Toru Hasegawa from The Morpholio Project/the GSAPP Cloud Lab, Tim Maly from Wired magazine, Cliff Kuang from Fast Company, and Inhabitat‘s very own founder and Editor-in-Chief, Jill Fehrenbacher. Sandy Remix Treehouse Made of Sandy-Fallen Trees

Check out treehouse master Roderick Romero’s latest creation – a giant nest made from trees damaged by Hurricane Sandy at the Brooklyn Botanical Garden! Called Sandy Remix, the structure is now open to the public and features 18 different types of trees from around the garden.

Art Exhibit: A Story of Fish & Crushed Cans

The Queens Botanical Garden presents a mixed media exhibit by artist Iandry Randriamandroso created from discarded, crushed aluminum cans found on the streets, and cardboard and burlap from local groceries, as well as wordless hand-made books about a fish and a crushed can. It illustrates how growth is disrupted by invasive species. The exhibit is on display at the Visitor & Administration Building Gallery from April 22 through July 22. Visitors will be invited to create their own art at an interactive print-making station that will remain in the gallery for the duration of the exhibition. Free with Garden Admission.

David d’Ostillio: The Chopping Block

Join David D’Ostilio at Open Source Gallery as he demonstrates his skills using old fashioned tools, a rite passed down to him by his grandfather. “The Chopping Block” is both an homage to his own past and a critique of perceived notions about gender roles. The artist will play the role of lumberjack, donning the stereotypical clothing, bringing in a 10-foot long log and sawing it into smaller pieces and then chop the stumps into firewood with an antique axe.

Call for Submissions: Enter Your Designs in Reclaim NYC’s Reclaim x2 Charity Exhibition to Benefit Sandy Storm Victims

After the success of their first initiative, Reclaim NYC is back with ‘Reclaim x2: Design that’s more than the sum of its parts.‘ Writer Jennifer Krichels Gorsche, Designer Pages‘ Editor-in-chief Jean Lin, and designer Brad Ascalon, the founders of Reclaim NYC, just launched a call for designers to pair up and create works inspired by the idea of collaboration. Participants are encouraged to work with creatives outside of their own firms or disciplines to address the theme of coming together in times of need. Unlike the first event which focused on implementing Sandy debris in designs, Reclaim x2 is opening up material choices and the theme beyond reclaimed materials. Selected works will be exhibited and sold at Reclaim x2 during NYC Design Week, and all proceeds will go to aid continuing Hurricane Sandy relief. Design concepts, renderings and photography should be submitted to info@reclaimnyc.org. The deadline for submission is February 11, 2013 and the selected designers will be notified by February 15, 2013.

Urban Uprising Conference: Re-Imagining the City

The Urban Uprising Conference is a two day event exploring how architects and designers can shape a city to be more just, more resilient, and better serve the majority of its population. From the revolutions sometimes called the “Arab Spring” to the vigorous demonstrations of the “Occupy Wall Street” movement, and more, the conference will address the lessons from around the world on how do we understand social change in this current moment. Speakers include: David Harvey (Director, Center for Place, Culture, and Politics, CUNY Graduate Center), Frances Fox Piven (Distinguished Professor of Political Science and Sociology, CUNY), Rob Robinson (Campaign to Restore National Housing, Take Back the Land, US Human Rights Network), Peter Marcuse (Professor Emeritus of Urban Planning, Columbia University), Marian Kramer (Co-chair, National Welfare Rights Union, founding member, League of Revolutionary Black Workers).
