This Friday, May 17th the Design Management Chair Dr. Mary McBride will be guest moderator for a Material ConneXion Roundtable, Conversations With a Consequence: Designing for the Triple Bottom Line. As moderator she will be leading a discussion with the top industry leaders about the future of design. Mary’s model known as “The Triple Bottom Line by Design,” identifies the opportunity for design and designers to create value for their company’s profit margin through the creation of sustainable, environmentally sound, and socially beneficial services and products. Attendees are encouraged to submit topics they would like to discuss with the intent of hosting a discussion of relevance and impact.

Go Green for Fashion will take place at the posh XVI rooftop lounge in midtown Manhattan and will honor 10 movers and shakers in sustainable fashion, including our very own Jasmin Chua of Ecouterre.com and Yuka Yoneda of Inhabitat NYC and Clossette. Other honorees include Kate Sekules, founder of ReFashioner, Cyrena Lee, Director at Refashioner, Starre Vartan, founder of Eco-Chick, award-winning designer Carrie Parry, and a special keynote speech will be presented by Kristen Arnett, founder of the Green Beauty Team (www.greenbeautyteam.com). The first 100 people there will receive Sprout eco-friendly wristwatches!

The event will benefit ProjectArt, an award-winning organization developing a new model of arts education, one that allows youth to actualize their artistic visions while building their self-esteem and advance as all-around achievers.

LIC Block Party!

Head on over to the SculptureCenter this Saturday for the first LIC Block Party ever! This fun and free event will feature artist-led activity tents, a stage with live music and interactive performances and a community-built, large-scale temporary sculpture as well as an Artist Vendor Market and a family-friendly local food court.

Here a breakdown of some of what you can expect:
Tarot readings with Jesse van Buren, pom-pom making with Abby Walton and Travis Boyer, Cubist face painting with Stephanie Dodes, carnival games with Lior Shvil, discover your inner child with Jacques Louis Vidal, balloon activities with Ross Moreno and Justin Cooper, ask a lawyer with The Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts (VLA), Elastic City neighborhood walks with Ben Weber, wondrous disguises and costumes with HiChristina! and clean your pennies with the Clean Penny Service. Kim Holleman will bring an oasis on wheels with Trailer Park, a mobile public park and Free Style Art will lead block party guests in building a large-scale temporary sculpture inspired by the changing architectural landscape of Long Island City.

Artist Jennifer Sullivan will emcee a music and performance program featuring the all female mariachi group Mariachi Flor de Toloache, The Kate Bush Dance Troupe, Queens Jazz Overground, and Neal Medlyn, as well as a Fitness Intermission presented by the Long Island City YMCA. Take a break from the block party and participate in a Masala Bhangra Workout® dance routine that modernizes the high-energy folk dance of Bhangra with the exhilaration of Bollywood movies. Wind down with special late afternoon DJ sets by DJ JAR JAR WATTVR aka Jory Rabinovitz and Jesse Hlebo.
