LUMEN is not a traditional film festival or gallery art experience. It is a one-day, 6-hour festival that features video and performance art by emerging artists and more established artists at the forefront of their media. LUMEN begins before the sun sets]]> LUMEN is not a traditional film festival or gallery art experience. It is a one-day, 6-hour festival that features video and performance art by emerging artists and more established artists at the forefront of their media. LUMEN begins before the sun sets and continues until midnight. Videos, performances, and installations occur simultaneously. There is no “main stage” or center focus, instead visitors are invited to safely and organically discover art scattered throughout the site. LUMEN 2013 will be held at Lyons Pool, a publicly-owned NYC Department of Parks and Recreation site that is named after Joseph H. Lyons.

This year's Riverkeeper Sweep, a day of service for the Hudson River, is expected to attract as many as 1,000 volunteers to help clean up more than 150 miles of shoreline in more than 60 locations on the Hudson River and its tributaries. Riverkeeper has joined TerraCycle’s Cigarette Waste Brigade to recycle cigarette butts and related cigarette waste collected during the cleanup. Each cleanup is organized by volunteers with Riverkeeper’s support, and each volunteer group may recycle not only cigarette butts, but additional categories of waste, such as chip bags and candy wrappers. There’s no question that social media and mobile devices have a daily impact upon our lives – but what effects do these relatively recent technologies have on the design process? Next week, the AIANY Global Dialogues Committee will host Viral Voices: Global Discussions, a panel that will investigate the impact of social media, technology and device culture on the design process — and ultimately the way architects and designers practice. Topics range from “how to shape a global conversation” to “how to foster relations between academia and the profession” and “how to harness the power of hyper information sharing.” The expert panel of industry professionals includes Mark Wigley, Dean of the GSAPP at Columbia University, David Basulto and David Assael of ArchDaily, Carlo Aiello from eVolo, David Fano from CASE, Toru Hasegawa from The Morpholio Project/the GSAPP Cloud Lab, Tim Maly from Wired magazine, Cliff Kuang from Fast Company, and Inhabitat‘s very own founder and Editor-in-Chief, Jill Fehrenbacher.
