Join Green Drinks NYC for a film premiere of the investigative documentary about the Gulf oil spill, The Big Fix. The film is part of Green Drinks NYC’s 7 NIGHTS OF AWARENESS. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with filmmakers along with Mary McDonald, Sr. VP, National Business Development of Earth Share New York; May Boeve, Executive Director, 350.org; Lyna Hinke,: 350.org NYC; and Margaret Lydecker, Founder of Green Drinks NYC.

In addition to the devastation millions of gallons of oil caused last year, new evidence shows the oil is still leaking, a widespread health epidemic is possibly underway among Gulf states residents and that fish & shrimp may not be safe to eat.

Critics say that The Big Fix is part daring journalism, part archival investigation and part eco-horror story. The Big Fix features Peter Fonda and received critical acclaim earlier this year as the only Official Selection Documentary of the Cannes Film Festival.

The Solar-Powered Film Series is the first in New York City to use the power of the sun to operate an outdoor “eco-theater.” The independent film venue integrates natural and human-made components of our urban environment creating the city’s “greenest” motion picture showcase. The series, held at Solar One’s outdoor location in beautiful Stuyvesant Cove Park, showcases a commitment to green energy by powering each screening with clean, renewable, carbon-free solar energy.

The second week will be more eclectic, starting with an evening with local bicycle activist and Friend of Solar One Matthew Modine, who will be showing a selection of his own short films; continuing with Dirty Business, and expose of the “clean coal” myth; and ending with Home, a beautiful and inspiring look at our one and only planetary home through gorgeous aerial photography and historical/evolutionary narration by Glenn Close.

All films are free and open to the public.

It also helps reduce the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and obesity.”

In addition to being an internationally renowned actor, Matthew is also a filmmaker, writer, photographer. He has worked with many of the film industry’s most acclaimed directors on projects including Birdy, Full Metal Jacket, Married to the Mob, and Shortcuts and Showtime’s Weeds.
August 26 Dirty Business (2010, 90 mins)
Can coal ever really be made “clean”? If we were to try to wean ourselves off coal, how would we keep the lights on? Is renewable energy ready for prime time?

August 27 Home (2009, 93 mins)
Over the past 200,000 years, humans have upset the balance of planet Earth, a balance established by nearly 4 billion years of evolution.

The first week’s selections will focus on food and urban agriculture, definitely one of the hottest environmental topics around! Along with films about dirt, the new urban farming movement and the genesis of the local food craze, they’ll be hosting their friends from Eagle Street Rooftop Farm with a farm stand of fresh Brooklyn-grown treats, along with speakers from the Lower East Side Ecology Center, Build It Green and Just Food- what a delicious and informative weekend!

All films are free and open to the public.

The Solar-Powered Film Series Week One Line Up:

August 18 DIRT! The Movie (2009, 86 mins)
DIRT! The Movie–directed and produced by Bill Benenson and Gene Rosow–takes you inside the wonders of the soil. It tells the story of Earth’s most valuable and underappreciated source of fertility–from its miraculous beginning to its crippling degradation. Narrated by Jaime Lee Curtis.

August 19 Urban Roots, (2011, 90 mins)
Produced by Leila Conners (The 11th Hour) and Mathew Schmid and directed by Mark Mac-Innis, the film follows the urban farming phenomenon in Detroit. Urban Roots is a timely, moving and inspiring film that speaks to a nation grappling with collapsed industrial towns and the need to forge a sustainable and prosperous future.

August 20 Food Fight (2008, 83 mins)
A fascinating look at how American agricultural policy and food culture developed in the 20th century, and how the California food movement has created a counter-revolution against big agribusiness.

Rooftop Films is a Summer Festival in NYC that showcases new, independent films and emerging bands in stunning outdoor locations across New York City. The organization co-presents the Rural Route Film Festival, taking place across the city this weekend. A special closing night screening will take place at the Brooklyn Grange rooftop farm on Sunday, August 7th. There will be two separate and distinct programs of short films, one starting at 8pm and the other at 10pm.

Rural Route is a film festival that focuses on rural people and places. Although the term “rural’ is used loosely, these films still share the common thread of showing us what has been unseen, not only around the world, but even in our very own city. The two screenings on closing night will be deal animal-human connection, urbanization, and everything in between. Tickets are $12 and can be purchased online here.

Directed by Alysa Nahmias and Benjamin Murray, Unfinished Spaces is a documentary that takes an inside look at Cuba’s National Art Schools through the eyes of the three architects who first realized the buildings but never got to finish the project. From the film website:

In 1961, three young, visionary architects were commissioned by Fidel Castro and Che Guevara to create Cuba’s National Art Schools on the grounds of a former golf course in Havana, Cuba. Construction of their radical designs began immediately and the school’s first classes soon followed. Dancers, musicians and artists from all over the country reveled in the beauty of the schools, but as the dream of the Revolution quickly became a reality, construction was abruptly halted and the architects and their designs were deemed irrelevant in the prevailing political climate. Forty years later the schools are in use, but remain unfinished and decaying. Castro has invited the exiled architects back to finish their unrealized dream.

The film original premiered at the Los Angeles Film Festival to much acclaim. It will be on view at the IFC Center from Friday, August 12 through Wednesday, August 18.

This week, New Yorkers can watch the eye-opening documentary, Farmageddon, at the Cinema Village movie theater in the East Village. About the film:

Americans’ right to access fresh, healthy foods of their choice is under attack. Farmageddon tells the story of small, family farms that were providing safe, healthy foods to their communities and were forced to stop, sometimes through violent action, by agents of misguided government bureaucracies, and seeks to figure out why.

Filmmaker Kristin Canty’s quest to find healthy food for her four children turned into an educational journey to discover why access to these foods was being threatened. What she found were policies that favor agribusiness and factory farms over small family-operated farms selling fresh foods to their communities. Instead of focusing on the source of food safety problems — most often the industrial food chain — policymakers and regulators implement and enforce solutions that target and often drive out of business small farms that have proven themselves more than capable of producing safe, healthy food, but buckle under the crushing weight of government regulations and excessive enforcement actions.

Farmageddon highlights the urgency of food freedom, encouraging farmers and consumers alike to take action to preserve individuals’ rights to access food of their choice and farmers’ rights to produce these foods safely and free from unreasonably burdensome regulations. The film serves to put policymakers and regulators on notice that there is a growing movement of people aware that their freedom to choose the foods they want is in danger, a movement that is taking action with its dollars and its voting power to protect and preserve the dwindling number of family farms that are struggling to survive.

Deer Park Public Library out on Long Island will be screening the documentary “Trashed,” which tracks the afterlife of garbage. Synopsis of Trashed from the official movie website:

“Trashed” is a provocative investigation of one of the fastest growing industries in North America. The garbage business. The film examines a fundamental element of modern American culture…the disposal of what our society defines as “waste.” It is an issue influenced by every American, most of whom never consider the consequences. Nor, it seems, the implications to our biosphere. At times humorous, but deeply poignant, “Trashed” examines the American waste stream fast approaching a half billion tons annually.

What are the effects all this waste will have on already strained natural resources? Why is so much of it produced? While every American creates almost 5 pounds of it every day, who is affected most? And who wants America to make more?

The film analyzes the causes and effects of the seemingly innocuous act of “taking out the garbage” while showcasing the individuals, activists, corporate and advocacy groups working to affect change and reform the current model. “Trashed” is an informative and thought-provoking film everyone interested in the future of sustainability should see.

Come see Manhattan Borough Historian Michael Miscione screen his award-winning documentary about the contentious creation of the five boroughs of New York City.

The film portrays the intense political battles that surrounded consolidation. It tells the story of the Brooklyn loyalists who struggled to maintain the independence of America’s third-largest city, and profiles two unlikely allies who fought for consolidation: Thomas “Easy Boss” Platt, and Andrew Haswell Green, the forgotten “Father of Greater New York.”

After the film enjoy a Q&A session with the director.

Documentary Screening and Panel Discussion at The Great Hall

Is there a connection between money and happiness? In her documentary, The Economics of Happiness, environmentalist Helena Norberg-Hodge advocates for localization—the rebuilding of communities and regional economies as the foundation of an “economics of happiness” to improve sustainability, raise cultural awareness and address societal woes tied to globalization. Local efforts profiled in the film include urban gardens in Detroit, Michigan, the Transition Town movement in England, community development in Japan, and cultural preservation in Peru and Ladakh (“Little Tibet”). The documentary launches in New York City at The Cooper Union’s historic Great Hall followed by a panel discussion with Norberg-Hodge, Judy Wicks (co-founder, Business Alliance for Local Living Economies), Gloria Steinem (co-founder New York and Ms. magazines) and others. This event is free and open to the public.

The Economics of Happiness is produced by Helena Norberg-Hodge, and written and directed by Norberg-Hodge, Steven Gorelick, and John Page. The launch event is sponsored by The Cooper Union Institute for Sustainable Design, with Grace and Communications/Sustainable Table, Slow Food NYC, and others.

Helena Norberg-Hodge is a leading analyst of the impact of the global economy on culture, agriculture, and individual identity. She is director of The International Society for Ecology and Culture (ISEC), and is a co-founder of both the International Forum on Globalization (IFG) and the Global Eco-village Network. In 1986, she received the Right Livelihood Award, or the “Alternative Nobel Prize” as recognition for her work in Ladakh.
