The Urban Uprising Conference is a two day event exploring how architects and designers can shape a city to be more just, more resilient, and better serve the majority of its population. From the revolutions sometimes called the “Arab Spring” to the vigorous demonstrations of the “Occupy Wall Street” movement, and more, the conference will address the lessons from around the world on how do we understand social change in this current moment. Speakers include: David Harvey (Director, Center for Place, Culture, and Politics, CUNY Graduate Center), Frances Fox Piven (Distinguished Professor of Political Science and Sociology, CUNY), Rob Robinson (Campaign to Restore National Housing, Take Back the Land, US Human Rights Network), Peter Marcuse (Professor Emeritus of Urban Planning, Columbia University), Marian Kramer (Co-chair, National Welfare Rights Union, founding member, League of Revolutionary Black Workers).

BMW Guggenheim Lab, a project by the Guggenheim Museum and BMW, opens on August 3rd on a previously empty lot in the East Village. The goal of the lab is to explore different issues facing contemporary cities and provide a public forum for sharing ideas and practical solutions.

Maria Nicano, the assistant curator of the Guggenheim, describes the lab as “an urban think-tank, community center, and a gathering space.” Each city’s lab will have a distinct theme and a unique structure, specially designed for its space. The lot in NYC is located on First Street, right off of Houston between First and Second Avenues. Atelier Bow-Wow created what they call “a traveling toolbox” made from carbon fiber. The lower part is described as a Mediterranean loggia, which will mostly be left open and act as a public plaza. Visitors will be able to enter from both sides creating a “cross pollination and user interaction.”

The box structure will hover above the plaza and its moveable parts — screens, lighting, shelves, seating — will be lowered and raised depending on what the plaza is being used for. The toolbox has all of the pieces to accommodate almost any type of event, from lectures and performances to gatherings and experiments. Small wooden structures placed outside the box will house restrooms and a cafe, creating an interesting juxtaposition between the features:

Whereas the main BMW Guggenheim Lab structure is forward-looking in its materiality and highly urban in its programmatic approach, the design of the restrooms and cafe references timeless timber construction that has been used in many settings, both rural and urban. Together, the wooden shelters and the main BMW Guggenheim Lab structure will form a temporary twenty-first-century ensemble that in each city will frame a particular urban void.

The lab will be hosting a variety of workshops and classes, so check the website for the most up to date information.

Hours of Operation:
Wednesday: 1–9 pm
Thursday: 1–9 pm
Friday: 1–10 pm
Saturday: 10 am–10 pm
Sunday: 10 am–10 pm

Hosted in cooperation with the City of New York and the City University of New York, the Summit is a national event designed to tackle the pressing issue of creating smart, sustainable, livable communities. Beyond “thinking green,” the Summit will address the topic of sustainability in the context of economic, health, social and environmental issues. As a critical strategy for long-term economic vitality of a region, we’ll discuss best practices and policies around jobs, finance, energy, facilities, infrastructure and urban planning.

On a practical level, the Summit will help government leaders address the pressing financial challenges they face by unlocking new sources of revenue, cost savings and economic development strategies associated with building 21st century communities.

In addition to the networking and collaboration that will take place, the governing editorial team will capture the Summit conversations and create the Sustainability Playbook to be published and widely distributed this year.

Registration is complimentary for the Public Sector.

For conference registration and general assistance contact:

Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation is hosting a discussion on the policies behind Regenerative Urbanism, a movement towards regeneration of resources within local urban economies. To minimize the destructive effects of consumption patterns of metropolis on their environment and globally, the movement suggest transforming the “metabolism” of cities from a linear consumption of goods and resources to a natural, circular “metabolism.” In this context, waste does not exist: every output by an organism is also an input which replenishes the whole living environment. The panel will discuss the effect of population densities and patterns on the sustainable regeneration of urban resources.

Panel:

Laura Lawson, Chair, Department of Landscape Architecture, Rutgers University

Terry Schwarz, Director, Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative, Kent State University

The Event is moderated and organized by Robert A. Beauregard, Chair of Doctoral Program Subcommittee on Urban Planning, GSAPP.

Columbia University is hosting Charles Komanoff, an energy-policy analyst, transport economist and environmental activist in New York City, who will be speaking about his transportation pricing model. Komanoff “re-founded” NYC’s bike-advocacy group Transportation Alternatives in the 1980s, co-founded the pedestrian-rights group Right Of Way in the 1990s, and wrote and edited the landmark reports Subsidies for Traffic, The Bicycle Blueprint, and Killed by Automobile.

Komanoff’s spreadsheet model is the analytical engine for congestion pricing in New York City, which proponents hope will reduce the perceived geographic and class inequities in Mayor Bloomberg’s congestion pricing plan. This intricate and elaborate model calculates the impact of time-of-day-varied congestion tolls and transit fares on New York City traffic speeds, gridlock costs and agency revenues.

Join Komanoff for a presentation and discussion of his model, the “Balanced Transportation Analyzer,” and the prospects for enacting congestion pricing in New York.
