Facebook has tapped renowned architect Frank Gehry to design the interior of its newly leased New York office, a 100,000-square-foot space set on two floors at 770 Broadway (a LEED Silver-certified building with ultra-efficient lighting and water systems). This isn’t Gehry’s first stint with the social media giant – he’s also behind the design of Facebook’s Menlo Park campus expansion in San Francisco, which features a rooftop garden. Though Gehry has no plans to add a garden to the New York offices, open floor plans, natural lighting and collaborative workspaces will be at the core of the design.

Designed by Joedega, the colorful, hand-woven rugs and mats are recycled from dozens of shredded shirts. The unique mats can be found at Aelfie’s Bushwick showroom, along with a collection of vintage carpets and a friendly, in-store cat.

The black Hadron Lamp is so electrifying that a jellyfish looking for a date might easily be fooled. The brainchild of designer Joe Doucet, the floor lamp is a translucent membrane filled with thin electroluminescent wire. The young NYC-based designer, who currently holds more than 40 patents for his designs and inventions, presented the Hadron during New York Design Week.

We’ve been wanting to see Lamacek‘s new Phelt “clusters” in person ever since we found out about them, and we finally got our chance this weekend at BKLYN Designs. The fun series takes eco-felt made from 100% recycled plastic bottles and turns it into spirally groupings that can be used as wall art, seat cushions, coasters and pretty much whatever else you can think of (Lamacek takes custom orders as well). We got a chance to ask Connie Lam, who founded Lamacek with partner Michael Sedlacek, about PHELT. Read on to see what we learned.

After the debut of her Live Screen hydroponic garden during NY Design Week 2012, Brooklyn-based designer Danielle Trofe is returning this year with a new series of off-the-grid LED lighting fixtures that are illuminated using the power of falling sand. Based on the shape of the hourglass, the new lamps need to be flipped to continue working and require the user’s involvement to stimulate awareness of the finite nature of lighting energy sources.

With BKLYN Designs 2013 just around the corner, we’ve been tooting the horns of some of our favorite NYC-based green designers who will present their work at the fair this year — and we’re excited to announce that Caleb Zipperer will be on the scene with his fresh brand of furniture inspired by games from his youth. Zipperer honed his craft as an apprentice for Dakota Jackson before moving to Williams-Sonoma, where he continues to work as a lead designer while still running his Williamsburg studio.
