The black Hadron Lamp is so electrifying that a jellyfish looking for a date might easily be fooled. The brainchild of designer Joe Doucet, the floor lamp is a translucent membrane filled with thin electroluminescent wire. The young NYC-based designer, who currently holds more than 40 patents for his designs and inventions, will present the Hadron during New York Design Week this month.

After the debut of her Live Screen hydroponic garden during NY Design Week 2012, Brooklyn-based designer Danielle Trofe is returning this year with a new series of off-the-grid LED lighting fixtures that are illuminated using the power of falling sand. Based on the shape of the hourglass, the new lamps need to be flipped to continue working and require the user’s involvement to stimulate awareness of the finite nature of lighting energy sources.

If the last month has shown us anything, it’s that New Yorkers know how to mobilize in the face of disaster. We’ve been tracking numerous organizations focused on bringing relief to Hurricane Sandy victims, and the latest to come out of the woodwork is Reclaim NYC. The initiative, started by writer Jennifer Krichels Gorsche, Designer Pages‘ Editor-in-chief Jean Lin, and designer Brad Ascalon, invited over 20 artists and designers to create one-of-a-kind furniture and objects using reclaimed materials from the storm. In about two weeks, the works will be put up for a silent auction and all proceeds will be donated to the American Red Cross in Greater New York to benefit those still feeling the effects of Sandy. Check out our gallery for a sneak peek of what will be included in the auction, and stay tuned for more designs – including a piece from Inhabifriends and reclaimed woodworkers extraordinaire Uhuru! The Reclaim NYC silent auction will take place on December 19th from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Ligne Roset’s SoHo showroom, located at 155 Wooster Street. Students and professors at the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) have collaborated to redesign the shipping pallets commonly used in the beverage industry. Their new pallet, the SodaBIB can be broken apart by hand and used as a substructure to build thatch roofs from discarded soda bottles. The bottles’ bodies are crushed, and then threaded into the pallet pieces—the bottle caps hold everything in place so no nails, screws or tools are necessary! The SodaBIB is envisioned as a dual-purpose method for dealing with waste plastic bottles while providing efficient shelter with no material cost in relief areas and developing countries. A small prototype roof was constructed last year, and held up well in tests—so now the team has launched a Kickstarter Campaign to raise funds for the construction of their first full-scale proof-of-concept model.

This morning, Mayor Bloomberg and the New York City Economic Development Corporation launched a new 3D-printing competition called “New York’s Next Top Makers” to invite promising NYC designers and inventors to submit their designs for a chance to win cash prizes and an opportunity to prototype their products. The announcement was made at the ribbon-cutting of the new 25,000-square-foot Shapeways 3D-printing “Factory of the Future” in Long Island City, Queens, which when complete, will have the potential to be the biggest consumer-facing 3D-printing manufacturing facility in the world. The mayor and the city are hoping that the contest will act as a catalyst for NYC entrepreneurs and makers and boost creativity and small business in the city. The cash prizes have still not been announced but the top six makers will win studio space from NYDesigns, a chance to bring their designs to life, and mentorships from Shapeways, Adafruit Industries, and Honeybee Robotics.
