Santiago Calatrava‘s World Trade Center Transportation Hub was nothing more than a series of beams and cranes until recently, but now the essence of the structure is finally beginning to emerge. The Port Authority released new images this week of the interior of the 800,000-square-foot structure (also known as Oculus), revealing white marble and soaring articulated ribs. All of that opulence doesn’t come cheap though as the project is turning out to be one of the most expensive train stations ever.

While relaxing on a rooftop garden doesn’t usually conjure up images of a murder scene, the Metropolitan Museum of Art‘s terrace has combined the two very opposite ideas with its new “blood-splattered” exhibit by Pakistani artist Imran Qureshi. The Roof Garden Commission: Imran Qureshi is a bold response to global violence and the artist’s yearning for peace in the advent of war and man-made disasters. In order to achieve the gruesome effect, Qureshi splattered red acrylic paint into patterns of foliage, feathers and wings across the 8,000-square-foot canvas. Visitors to the garden are invited to understand the parallels between the difficult topics of life, death and disaster as they walk across the installation, which will be on exhibit until November 3rd.

The High Line made a name for itself by turning land atop an elevated rail line into a flourishing park, but can the same be done for spaces underneath these kinds of structures? The Design Trust for Public Space is embarking on a plan to transform areas under New York City’s plentiful bridges, elevated highways, subways and rail lines into places for community engagement and artistic inspiration. Their project, Under the Elevated: Reclaiming Space, Connecting Communities, will bring together local community leaders, planners, architects, artists, and cultural organizations to develop strategies to maximize the functionality and use of these often-abandoned and sometimes downright scary areas.

Despite having received over $300 million in tax-funded grants and $400 million in private donations, the National September 11 Memorial and Museum will now be charging visitors a $2 service fee to enter the museum. The fee, which went into effect last month, is not sitting well with the family members of some of the victims, who feel that the charge (applied to online and phone ticket purchases) violates the mission behind the memorial. Commercialization or funding gap? Some say they are happy to pay to support museum operations while others believe the foundation is making money off the very lives they are supposed to be honoring.

Now in its second year, the Folly Competition – a two-month residency project sponsored by the Architectural League of New York and Socrates Sculpture Park that explores the tradition of 18th and 19th century folly gardens – has announced a winner. Toshihiro Oki, Jen Wood, and Jared Diganci of Toshihiro Oki Architects took home top honors for their design, tree wood, which was selected out of 150 submitted proposals, and their folly will soon be realized within the grounds of Socrates Sculpture Park in Long Island City. Follies are traditional garden structures which have no discernible purpose except to draw the eye to a specific view. The competition, judged by a panel of architects, designers and artists, seeks to explore the overlapping intersection of architecture and sculpture that draws on the techniques of the two disciplines.

Students at South Street Elementary School in Newark, New Jersey are both artists and conservationists. After collecting over 5,000 bottle caps in their local community, the students arranged the caps into an eco-friendly 8-foot by 12-foot rendition of Vincent van Gogh’s famed Starry Night. The project, currently at The Newark Museum, was officially completed in June 2012 and was designed by South Street’s teachers as a way for students to get hands-on knowledge about conservation and to encourage them to become responsible global citizens.

The New Museum has hijacked the city’s pay phones and transformed them into time machines that allow city-dwellers to make calls 20 years into New York’s past. Anyone strolling along Manhattan’s streets can now walk up to a pay phone, dial 1-855-FOR-1993, and hear a recording that uncovers what a particular neighborhood was like 20 years ago. From navigating the dangerous streets of Times Square to cab drivers fearing for their lives, this project paints a picture that’s quite different from the New York City we know today.

If you feel like this curious bookshelf looks like it’s growing right out of tree trunks, you’re not far off from the truth. Cazenovia, New York-based artist David Harper created the installation, which he calls “STACKS”, by recycling fallen logs. Built on the theme, “these trees shall be my books”, Harper borrowed from William Shakespeare’s “As You Like It” as he pays homage to the living things that enable us to seek and distribute knowledge.
