Grand Central Holiday Fair

The vendors in Grand Central began hawking their goods on November 15, and they will be occupying the station’s historic Vanderbilt Hall until Christmas Eve. Now in its 12th year, the market offers a superb variety of more than 70 vendors. You’ll find handmade gifts, jewelry, toys, home decor and more. Bonus: the fair is elegantly decorated for the holidays, you don’t have to brave the cold to peruse the stands, and you can admire the Transit Museum‘s beautiful Holiday train show!

The Holiday Shops at Bryant Park

With the ice skating rink and brightly lit Christmas trees, the holiday market at Bryant Park is one of the most festive in the city. More than 120 vendors set up shop in the temporary booths at the end of October and will be selling their goods through January 8th. The independent artisans are from around the world, with a large selection of local craftsmen. You’ll find sustainable shops like Organic Wares and Engage Green as well as a few more well-known names like Max Brenner chocolates.

Part store, part design gallery, Urban Alchemist offers a lovely mix of beautifully crafted wares made by independent designers alongside carefully selected vintage finds. The shop is a cooperative run by the very designers who are selling their products, and the goods change frequently as they are all unique, one of a kind pieces. On any given day, there is a selection of jewelry, clothing, wall art, home goods, ceramics, and more. Most of the designers are local, but Urban Alchemist also sells the wares of artisans working in the greater New York area and around the country.

The GreenShows Eco-Fashion Pop-Up Shop Windows Get Set Up Today at Bloomingdale’s SoHo

Last week, our sister eco-fashion site Ecouterre reported on The GreenShows launching a weeklong pop-up shop at Bloomingdale’s SoHo, and now today’s the day the newly styled store-front windows will be set up. The displays are being merchandised today in anticipation of the event, which will take place from April 20 to 23 and feature the most covetable goods from sustainable designers such as Ajna Collection, Artists and Revolutionaries, H. Fredriksson, Luis Valenzuela, Robin Brouillette, Samantha Pleet, Sprout, Study NY by Tara St James, Suzanne Rae, The Battalion, and The Sway. See something you fancy? All of the eco-fashionable wares will be on sale from Wednesday to Sunday, so stop by and do a little shopping whether it be window or the real kind.

St. Luke’s Thrift Shop is tucked away in a small basement store located next to The Church of St. Luke in the Fields in the West Village. Started by parents of children attending the school, the store offers books, furniture, accessories, and clothing at affordable prices. All proceeds benefit the children’s school and the church.

Angel Street Thrift Shop

Opened in 1997, Angel Street Thrift Shop sells gently used and new clothing, accessories, and house ware items. The store also offers antique jewelry, books, furniture, and art work. All items are donated and proceeds benefit programs for individuals and families affected by substance abuse, HIV/AIDS, and mental illness. Donations are fully tax deductible, and can be picked up for free or dropped off at their store. The staff is extremely helpful, and they stock changes daily.

Tokyo Joe is a small consignment shop with everything from DKNY to Givenchy. Staff isn’t the friendliest, but there are some good bargains to be had. You really have to search through the small space, but prices are decent, and merchandise is in good condition (if not new) and on trend. All items are consigned by appointment only. In 2009, Tokyo Joe was named the city’s best consignment store by the Village Voice.

They are very selective in choosing pieces, and one must make an appointment in order to consign. Prices vary, depending on the label and the condition of the item. There really is something for everyone, and it’s hard to leave this store without finding at least one amazing piece to complete your wardrobe.

You may have to dig around to find the right pieces, but the staff is extremely helpful, and more than willing to help you look. The store also rents out pieces for movie & television projects, theme parties, and magazine shoots.

Fisch For The Hip is a small designer consignment shop tucked away on 18th Street. Blink, and you might miss it! They are known for their high-end designer duds, but they also carry shoes, clothing, and denim in great condition and at reasonable prices. The store accepts seasonal merchandise as consignments by walk-in/drop-off or by appointment. Be sure to read their list of acceptable designers online before making the trip. Any merchandise that has not sold upon completion of the consignment period can be donated to Housing Works thrift shops at the consignor’s request.

Angela’s Vintage Boutique is a great East Village gem filled with decorative vintage coats and accessories from the ’40s and ’50s. There is also a decent assortment of bags, belts, and shoes from the ’80s. The merchandise changes often and the owner is usually in-store. She is well-versed in her stock and will direct you towards new pieces, and sometimes bargain with you if an item isn’t marked. Not to be missed!

They are best known for their vast collection of luxury labels, but do carry several lesser-known brands at reasonable prices. They are known to have occasional amazing sales, and the staff is extremely approachable and helpful. They will often go through new merchandise and over flow stock in their basement to help a shopper find what she’s looking for.
