Founded in 2004, Build It Green NYC claims to be the only NYC non-profit retail outlet that stocks salvaged and surplus building materials, in an effort to keep these items out of landfills. They offer large household appliances, lighting, flooring, windows, cabinets, and much more, at half the original sale price. All proceeds benefit the the Community Environmental Center’s environmental education programs. In the fall of 2011, the organization opened an additional location in Gowanus, Brooklyn. BIG!NYC’s original reuse center is also open seven days a week in Astoria (3-17 26th Ave., Queens NY 11102). Shop 40-80% off used materials, donate your old kitchen cabinets (& other items), or learn about how we can help remove your unwanted items during your home renovation with our free deconstruction services.

The vendors in Grand Central began hawking their goods on November 15, and they will be occupying the station’s historic Vanderbilt Hall until Christmas Eve. Now in its 12th year, the market offers a superb variety of more than 70 vendors. You’ll find handmade gifts, jewelry, toys, home decor and more. Bonus: the fair is elegantly decorated for the holidays, you don’t have to brave the cold to peruse the stands, and you can admire the Transit Museum‘s beautiful Holiday train show!

Part store, part design gallery, Urban Alchemist offers a lovely mix of beautifully crafted wares made by independent designers alongside carefully selected vintage finds. The shop is a cooperative run by the very designers who are selling their products, and the goods change frequently as they are all unique, one of a kind pieces. On any given day, there is a selection of jewelry, clothing, wall art, home goods, ceramics, and more. Most of the designers are local, but Urban Alchemist also sells the wares of artisans working in the greater New York area and around the country.

Furnish Green sells refurbished furniture that is donated or salvaged. They sell awesome pieces that range from small marble table lamps and vintage chests to IKEA-esque end tables and modern chairs. When trying to move out old pieces to make way for new, they have awesome sales, where they slash prices by as much as 60 or 70 percent. Because they’re on the 5th floor, there are some restrictions for furniture removal from the store. The freight elevator is only available Monday-Friday from 9am to 12 noon, and 1pm until 5pm, so plan accordingly. After hours, 6pm through 9:30pm, it can be used for a $5 fee, but it is not available on weekends.

Moss opened as a small gallery space in 2004, and by 2009 had expanded to its current showroom of 7,000 square feet. They offer creatively-inspired furniture for adult and children, primarily from Italian manufacturers. They also sell lighting, jewelry, books, and accessories. The focus is on the art of the object, and not so much its perceived material function. Pieces are displayed gallery-style, and they rotate exhibitions. The space is more about presentation, and decor, but the staff is friendly and approachable. They are well-versed in the details and functionality of each piece, and will be able to answer any consumer questions.
