Nearly twelve years after the World Trade Center’s Twin Towers fell, construction workers have finally topped off 1 World Trade Center with an iconic spire. The capping of the 1,776-foot-tall building brings the structure to its full height, adding what is now the tallest building in the western hemisphere to the New York City skyline. The addition also symbolizes a victorious comeback that honors the many who lost their lives.

The mall-ification of NYC has been pretty difficult to ignore, and it seems like every week another one of the small shops that makes our city so unique gets replaced with a shiny new outpost of some national corporation. A similar fate has been looming over Bleecker Bob’s Golden Oldies, one of the West Village’s most beloved record stores. With rent jacked up to prices that are impossible to pay, the hallowed hall of vinyl recently revealed on their  Facebook page that another tenant, Forever Yogurt, would be moving in when their lease was up. But the story doesn’t end there – as another, rather ingenious, solution could be in the works.

This week, the Rockwell Group announced exciting plans to build a treehouse-inspired Imagination Playground in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Brownsville. The firm is working with NYC Parks to transform a 1.5-acre section of Betsy Head Park into an active playground to encourage kid-friendly activity and play outdoors. The design of the new playground will feature a winding ramp that snakes around London Plane trees, jungle gyms that spill out into an open area and much more. Construction on the playground is set to begin in spring 2014 and the facility is expected to open by 2015.

The High Line made a name for itself by turning land atop an elevated rail line into a flourishing park, but can the same be done for spaces underneath these kinds of structures? The Design Trust for Public Space is embarking on a plan to transform areas under New York City’s plentiful bridges, elevated highways, subways and rail lines into places for community engagement and artistic inspiration. Their project, Under the Elevated: Reclaiming Space, Connecting Communities, will bring together local community leaders, planners, architects, artists, and cultural organizations to develop strategies to maximize the functionality and use of these often-abandoned and sometimes downright scary areas.

Edit: As of mid-morning, 1 WTC’s plan to become the tallest building in the western hemisphere today was scrapped due to high winds but the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey says the completing pieces of the structure will be lifted at a later date.

We’ll be seeing history in the making today as One World Trade Center is topped off with its final sections, making it the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere. In just a few hours, construction crews will complete the 408-foot spire that will bring the structure to its final height of 1,776 feet. The last pieces of the much-anticipated tower will then be fitted together to create a stainless steel beacon weighing almost six tons.

Now in its second year, the Folly Competition – a two-month residency project sponsored by the Architectural League of New York and Socrates Sculpture Park that explores the tradition of 18th and 19th century folly gardens – has announced a winner. Toshihiro Oki, Jen Wood, and Jared Diganci of Toshihiro Oki Architects took home top honors for their design, tree wood, which was selected out of 150 submitted proposals, and their folly will soon be realized within the grounds of Socrates Sculpture Park in Long Island City. Follies are traditional garden structures which have no discernible purpose except to draw the eye to a specific view. The competition, judged by a panel of architects, designers and artists, seeks to explore the overlapping intersection of architecture and sculpture that draws on the techniques of the two disciplines.

MoMA PS1’s VW Dome 2 – the temporary cultural center created after Hurricane Sandy left Rockaway Beach severely damaged – opened last Friday with a performance by singer and Rockaways resident Patti Smith. The geodesic dome structure will be up for the next month and is located in a parking lot between Beach 94th and 95th Streets. The opening kicked off a full series of exhibits, lectures and performances centered around rebuilding the storm-ravaged neighborhood.

Internet giant Yahoo! recently announced plans to expand its energy-efficient data and customer care center in Lockport, New York later this year. The expansion will use low-cost hydropower from the Niagara Hydroelectric Power Plant to decrease energy consumption and keep servers cool 98 percent of the year. An added plus to the plan is the 115 new jobs Yahoo! expects to create in the local area across the engineering, technology, and customer care fields.

New York firm Macro Sea has released a new design that would turn the Brooklyn Navy Yard into a state-of-the-art hub for technology, innovation, design and prototyping. Called New Lab, the 84,000-square-foot space is slated to be completed by 2014 with the goal of spurring U.S. manufacturing jobs and becoming a national model for sustainable industrial parks. The lab will support exchange between between green manufacturing startups, research and development teams, academia and digital fabricators by offering a variety of workroom spaces from 500-square-foot studios to 7,500-square-foot offices and co-working spaces.

New York’s waterfront tours are shifting focus as a result of Hurricane Sandy’s impact on the island’s infrastructure. In a nautical speaker series titled “Pressure Along The Edge: The Future of NYC’s Waterfront”, experts will educate passengers on the city’s coastlines and the impact of rising sea levels on real estate, infrastructure and businesses. In addition to featuring some of New York City’s most popular buildings, the tours will also look at the competing demands on the city’s waterfront — much of which became flooded during the superstorm.

The highly-anticipated Squibb Park Pedestrian Bridge connecting Brooklyn Heights to Brooklyn Bridge Park has finally opened, and locals could not be more pleased. The rather unusual “zig-zaggy” and “bouncy” $5 million bridge was designed by Ted Zoli and constructed by HNTB, who worked throughout March putting the finishing touches on it. With the structure now open, pedestrians are able to stroll over to Brooklyn Bridge Park from Brooklyn Heights without having to come in contact with cars and traffic.

Cornell University overcame a big hurdle in their proposal to build a new tech campus on Roosevelt Island when the New York City Planning Commission gave their plans the green light this week. The proposed campus was approved by the community board last year, and now that it has received the city’s blessing the 12-acre project is set to break ground in 2014 upon the approval of the City Council. The new campus, which was designed in part by both Skidmore, Owings and Merrill and Thom Mayne of Morphosis, will feature sustainable initiatives and will create opportunities for community and research collaborations to help further the energy and green development goals of the region.

The controversial QueensWay plan to turn an abandoned Queens rail line into an elevated park resembling Manhattan’s High Line is getting even closer to fruition. The Trust for Public Land, the organization working to transform the 3.5 miles of land into a public green space, recently submitted a request for development proposals. The project is seeking a company to conduct a feasibility study to test the soil, structure and estimated costs of construction in an effort to bring the hotly debated park to life.

Thousands of New Yorkers are still rebuilding after the devastating wrath of Hurricane Sandy – and as restoration of the hard-hit Far Rockaway continues, the Museum of Modern Art is seeking to collaborate with artists, architects and designers to rebirth the battered neighborhood with a unique mission. The new initiative is calling on ideas for alternative housing models, the creation of social spaces, new uses of public space, boardwalk restoration, protection of the shoreline, and more for the Rockaways.

Adjaye Associates‘ 13-story Sugar Hill housing complex is currently under construction in Harlem and, when complete, will bring 124 affordable housing units, a children’s museum, and an early education center to the neighborhood. Powered by funds from city, state and federal organizations, as well as from private investments, the building is hoped to invigorate the local community and act as a green model of urban renewal.
