The festival will take place on Governors Island and Liberty State Park from 10am to 4pm, plus, there will be different activities happening in waterfront neighborhoods throughout the city. There will be free ferry services between the islands as well as from piers in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and New Jersey. A major highlight of the day will be the free themed boat tours that take passengers to a variety of different places in the harbor to learn about things like Hudson River Park or New York’s urban agriculture .
If you have your own human-powered boat , you can join in the floatilla and participate in free paddling lessons and kayak tours. There will also be a 5-mile paddle from the Bronx River to the Long Island Sound. The Yonkers Paddling and Rowing Club is hosting its 9th annual circumnavigation around Manhattan with 60 brave kayakers starting from Pier 40 in Manhattan and traveling all the way around the island.
For those interested in a less strenuous water adventure, there will be free kayaking and fishing lessons on Governors Island and kayak tours leaving from Liberty State Park. Each island will also have its own fair , with presenters ranging from Green Mountain Energy hosting a green trivia contest to Qajaq USA demonstrating how to roll a kayak. More than three dozen organizations are participating in the fairs, including Solar One, GrowNYC, and Earthmatter NY. Check the website for a complete list of participants.
Food vendors will set up shop on each island, with the Red Hook Lobster Pound, Mister Softee, and Dosa Man being a few coming to Governors Island. Liberty State Park will be treated to Two Pitas in a Pod and Sassy Sweet Treats. Free concerts will also take place at both locations.
If you’re looking to learn a little something, the MWA is hosting “Water-Rama: A Symposium on Our Harbor .” The speaker series will cover a broad range of topics, including the future of the Department of City Planning’s Comprehensive Waterfront Plan and the effect of the EPA’s superfund programs on local waterfront sites.
Given the immense amounts of awesome events that are happening, you’ll definitely want to plan out your trip ahead of time. The City of Water Day website lists every event that’s taking place at each location , along with details about how to get from here to there . We’re already struggling to decide what to do! Think we can figure out how to be in six places at once by Saturday?
