Gallery: Central Park Now Glows With Energy-Saving Cree LED Street Ligh...

  • Just a short time after receiving a $100 million donation from an adoring New Yorker, Central Park also underwent a new green lighting makeover. Last month, the New York City Department of Transportation and the U.S. Department of Energy GATEWAY program successfully installed nearly 1,600 LED lights in Central Park which will cut the energy used without sacrificing style or safety. Designed by Cree, the lights were also fitted inside the traditional cast iron light stands that currently dot the walkways, so they still cast a familiar glow. The Cree lights have an estimated 75,000-hour lifespan and are expected to reduce energy usage by 62%, saving the park almost $30,000 a year in maintenance fees! Next time you are enjoying an evening stroll in Central Park, be sure to keep an eye out for these lovely new lights.
