DesigNYC Announces 2013 Healthy Communities Project, Connecting Designers and Non-Profits

DesigNYC [5] is launching the 2013 Healthy Communities Project, bringing together nonprofit organizations and designers to promote healthier living [6] in urban spaces. Eight teams were selected for this year’s program to help improve the lives of New Yorkers by encouraging physical activity, and working to reduce pollution and poor health habits. The projects will range from educational campaigns to building playgrounds, green markets [7] and public gardens.

Nonprofit [9] experts and design professionals will share their knowledge on a voluntary basis and develop design strategies for creating sustainable neighborhoods, providing access to fresh foods and promoting physical activity in urban spaces.
“‘Healthy Communities’ is a timely theme, and we are looking forward to working with our teams to create community gardens [10] for seniors, and design one-of-a-kind advocacy tools, in addition to launching desigNYC Lab, which expands our organization’s educational mission,” said desigNYC Executive Director Laetitia Wolff.
In addition to the eight teams selected for the main part of the program, the organizers have included three other nonprofit organizations to take part in the one-day designNYC Lab workshop [11]. The workshop will focus on design opportunities and projects to be developed later by desigNYC and other collaborators.
Lisa Green, partner at Selldorf Architects and chair of desigNYC project collaborations committee, characterized the selected projects as “strategies for providing access to resources that can lead to a healthier way of life and more sustainable neighborhoods [12] – all of which we feel can be improved through better design.”
The project will officially start on February 5, 2013 at a private kickoff summit held by designNYC.
