New Yorkers who are used to seeing the Empire State Building illuminate nightly might wonder what will set the Fourth of July light show apart from any other day. The answer is that instead of just static colors, the holiday display will be a dynamic showcase of LED hues and effects that sparkle along with Macy’s famous Independence Day display. The LED extravaganza, orchestrated by renowned lighting design artist Marc Brickman, will fire up at the beginning of the fireworks finale, which will feature a one-of-a-kind musical mash-up of Frank Sinatra’s “New York, New York” and “Empire State of Mind” by Alicia Keys and Jay-Z.

“I’m really excited that the Empire State Building will add its bright lights to the incredible show we’ve got planned for the nation,” said Usher. “It’s going to be an epic moment when Frank Sinatra’s classic “New York, New York” and the Jay-Z and Alicia Keys anthem “Empire State of Mind” close out the show.”

The iconic building’s Philips Color Kinetics LED light system replaced 546 old floodlights last year and now allows for customized light combinations to be created from a palette of over 16 million colors as well as effects like fades, sparkles, ripples, bursts and more. In addition to a host of other green upgrades, the LED swap-out has already realized the Empire State Building a collective $4.7 million in energy savings. The Empire State Building celebrated its brighter, greener lights last November with a light show choreographed to two Alicia Keys songs, “Girl on Fire” and “Empire State of Mind.”

Hoping to catch the ESB’s red, white and blue spectacle of lights yourself? Tune into 1010 WINS-AM or Z-100 FM or switch on NBC at 9:45PM on July 4th, 2013 to listen along to the music while you watch.
