NY Waterway Ferries to Get Eco Upgrades!
Posted By Lori Zimmer On October 19, 2011 @ 12:45 pm In News,Transportation,Water | No Comments
The green transportation of the NY Waterway East River Ferries is about to get a little greener. Partnering with the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority , each of NY Waterway ‘s 31 ferries will soon be updated with emission reducing technology. This upgrade will be the first of its kind, and it may be used as a model for vessels like these around the world. With the technology, nitrogen oxide pollutants will be reduced by 30 tons each year!
The upgrades will be given to all of the ferries in NY Waterway’s fleet, including the new East River Ferry . Two tons of sooty exhaust material will be totally eliminated every year. NY Waterway is greening itself on its own accord. Surprisingly, the State of New York does not control marine vessel emissions, leaving an open door for exhaust pollution. The EPA has standards , but they only apply to new vessels, and no regulations have been made to require old vessels to retrofit with cleaner technology.
The $8million dollar project, which will add custom fit green technology to each vessel, including diesel oxidation catalysts , will be completed by the spring of 2012. The project was partially funded by the Federal Transit Administration , contributing $4.8 million, $2.5 million from the city Department of Transportation and $1 million from NY Waterway.
Since its launch this summer, the East River Ferry has attracted twice the number of passengers that the city projected. According to data supplied to the New York Times by city officials, nearly 350,000 people have paid to ride the ferries since late June, far more than the 134,000 that was anticipated. And it’s easy to see why: the already green transportation does the job of eight city buses in one trip. The new upgrade will help the NY Waterway ferries reduce their environmental impact even more.
