The New York City Parks Department has announced that Philadelphia-based firm Emerald Green Group [2]will spearhead the renovation of iconic Central Park eatery Tavern on the Green [3]. After being closed to the public for two years, the bucolic park-side restaurant known for decades as a celebrity and events hotspot for power lunches, weddings [4], and over-the-top parties is poised to reopen as a smaller, more rustic cafe with a delicious sustainable menu that will include local delicacies like squid from Montauk [5] and Brooklyn’s own Mast Brothers [6] chocolate.
Emerald Green Group fought long and hard to take over the Tavern design [11], beating out dozens of other firms with their downsizing plan. The new design may look smaller, but will still fit 300 people inside, another 300 outside, and will even feature a take-out window! Chef Katy Sparks [12], who has been with the Tavern since the 1980s has been keeping busy the past two years consulting city restaurants [13] on sustainable menus and practices, perfectly preparing for the reopening of her old stomping grounds. Her new menu will include all kinds of delicious locally-sourced foods at more reasonable prices, so the Tavern will be a place almost anyone [14]can enjoy. New designs are still in the works, but we can’t wait to see what becomes of our favorite Central Park [15]food spot.
