Located in trendy DUMBO, Etsy’s new solar-powered office space was constructed to align with the criteria of the Living Buildings Challenge Petal certification, a strict sustainability standard for buildings. Working on the “materials” petal, the Etsy team insisted that everything inside the office be locally and responsibly sourced with environmentally safe finishes.

“We wanted to find a sustainability strategy that was aligned with the unique role that Etsy plays in commerce, and the model of production that Etsy sellers and our marketplace represent,” says Devon Leahy, Etsy’s director of sustainability and social innovation. “A lot of that is really based in craft, in materiality, in qualities that come with these time-honored traditions of making.”

Since its founding in 2005, Etsy has been an outspoken proponent of sustainability so it’s no surprise that the Etsy team took the Living Building Challenge very seriously. During the construction of the new offices, for example, the company managed to keep 95% of the construction waste out of landfills.

Equally as impressive is the fact that the company didn’t just seek out individual FSC-certified furniture designers for their sustainable office needs. Instead, the company chose to work with its listed furniture vendors by working to obtain group certification for the site’s designers and even some of their timber suppliers.

“We didn’t have a lot of guidance for how this would work for a small-scale maker,” Leahy said. “So how do you navigate things like FSC [Forest Stewardship Council] chain of custody certification for a sole proprietor? We had to figure this out. This project essentially answered a lot of those questions for makers at this scale.”

In addition to its ultra-sustainable furniture and efficiency features, Etsy employees can also enjoy extra bike storage, showers, and even a breathing room used for meditation and yoga.
