Who knew old, boxy classroom desks could make for a cool cafe-bar? Evidently artist Heather Millstone, who recently used retro desks as the principal design element in Veronica People's Club, which opened last summer in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. She teamed up with Julie Torres Moskovitz of Williamsburg-based architecture firm Fabrica 718 and created a playful refurbished design for the establishment, which spends its days as a coffee shop and moonlights as a restaurant and bar. The Franklin Street spot incorporates school desks and found objects from online listings and scrap yards with resilient utilitarian materials to create a stripped-down aesthetic in tune with the team’s previous projects. The green, simple design of VPC embodies the child-like camaraderie of the place, setting the stage for patrons and residents of Greenpoint to pursue artistic endeavors and form creative partnerships as successful as the one that built it.
