A gas explosion rocked an area underneath the High Line this morning, injuring two people. The blast occurred when a crew of construction workers tried to remove a gas tank from a former gas station at W. 14th St. and 10th Ave. The workers were rushed to Bellevue Hospital, where they were treated for cuts and burns but both are expected to survive.

Great news for Greenpoint and Williamsburg swimmers - McCarren Park Pool will be opening for business this summer on June 28th! As part of Mayor Bloomberg’s PlaNYC initiative, the pool is being rehabilitated into an aquatic recreational center that will be open for neighborhood residents throughout the year. The renovation, designed by Rogers Marvel Architects, is expected to achieve LEED Silver certification.

In a mission to make New Yorkers more healthy, Mayor Bloomberg is planning a ban of sodas and sugary drinks across the city. Soda, iced teas, and sports drinks that are over 16 ounces may soon disappear from the shelves of movie theaters, food carts, delis, restaurants, and sports arenas. As part of a plea to get citizens to join the fight against obesity, while his plan bans the monstrous sizes of these sweet drinks, their smaller-bottle counterparts will still remain in reach. So is Mayor Bloomberg’s removal of large, calorie-packed drinks a good idea, or is he going to far? Brooklyn-based Fiyel Levent was one of the talented designers that participated in the innovative 12 x 12 project, which upcycled wood from some of New York’s historic buildings into beautiful furniture.  Levent’s source of materials was the Mars Bar, a seminal East Village haunt that shuttered its doors to the chagrin of aging punks everywhere in 2011. Paying tribute to the cast of characters that frequented the bar since the 1970s, Levent created Vice Box, a gorgeous liquor and wine cabinet from reclaimed wood emblazoned with her signature pattern of circles.

It seems these days people are using the cloud for everything – even gardening! Brooklyn startup Bitponics takes hydroponic gardening to a more sophisticated level with its smart device and web site that let you manage your indoor farm right over the internet. Hydroponic systems offer a great way to grow some of your own food if you live in a cramped New York apartment, but for those new to growing plants, grasping all the details can be intimidating. Plus if you work long hours or travel a lot for work, there is always the risk that you could return home one evening to a dead batch of plants. Bitponics solves that issue by bringing urban gardening to the cloud so that you can control how much water and nutrients your herbs and tomatoes get even if you’re not at home.

Delancey Street will finally score some much needed pedestrian safety improvements beginning next week. The several blocks on the Lower East Side between the Bowery and the Williamsburg Bridge have long been among the most dangerous areas for pedestrians in Manhattan, but the Department of Transportation (DOT) will finally begin work on the corner of Delancey and Clinton. While New York is one of the most pedestrian-friendly cities around, this 11-block stretch has been dangerous for cars and deadly for pedestrians. Between 2006 and 2010, over 700 accidents and 9 deaths have occurred. We’re excited to see these improvements finally taking place to make this part of town less scary for those who want to walk or bike instead of drive.

Some great green news for NYC: The Brooklyn Navy Yard has announced that it’s developing a massive green manufacturing center for the city. The Navy Yard currently houses over 275 (mostly non-military) businesses employing over 6000 people, but the demand for space there far outweighs the supply. The new Green Manufacturing Center, which is backed by a $46 million-dollar investment from the Brooklyn Navy Yard and support from both the New York State senate and Mayor Bloomberg, will create nearly 300 new permanent jobs and roughly 400 construction jobs.

Last week, a disgruntled Chelsea resident posted fliers along the High Line Park begging tourists who visit the area to check their manners. The posters, most of which were torn down by other Chelsea residents, complained about visitors “trampling” and “taking pictures.” Naturally, most native New Yorkers guffawed at the condescending posters and replied via Facebook and blog comments that they don’t share the views of this one unhappy camper.

Get your cameras ready New Yorkers! “Manhattanhenge,” the solar phenomenon that awes NYC  just twice a year, strikes at 8:17PM tonight. At that time, the sun will align perfectly with Manhattan’s east-west grid, presenting spectacular sunsets on just about every street. Tonight we’ll be able to see a half sun on New York’s grid and tomorrow, the full sun will be showcased.

Columbia University’s 17-acre Manhattanville campus in West Harlem just announced that it has achieved LEED Platinum certification under the U.S. Green Building Council’s standards for neighborhood development. Located just north of Columbia’s Morningside Heights campus in what used to be an industrial neighborhood, the area bordered by 129th and 133rd Streets, Broadway and 12th Avenue, in addition to three properties east of Broadway between 131st and 134th, will feature pedestrian-friendly streets and open spaces while connecting West Harlem to the new Hudson River waterfront park. The Manhattanville campus is the first project in New York City to score the LEED platinum rating for an entire neighborhood plan.

HWKN’s new dance pavilion will be the very first thing visitors will see when they jump off the ferry at Fire Island Pines, one of the world’s premier gay resorts located on Fire Island, NY. The new wooden structure was designed as a bold and iconic form that replaces the pavilion dance club that was engulfed by a fire last November. HWKN’s Matthias Hollwich, whose name has been popping up all over New York City this year, described the new space: “The building forms intimate public spaces out of a single volume. It is carved and rutted like a piece of driftwood washed ashore by the sea.”

MOD{all} Studio recently sent us their green redesign of the Conover Cottages in Red Hook, Brooklyn. Called Eco-ttage, the sustainable facelift was the winning entry in a competition to give the iconic (but not very attractive) homes a much-needed overhaul, and is nearing completion of construction. Featuring several sustainable initiatives, Eco-ttage utilizes an existing cottage to implement a sustainable response.

MOD{all}’s website is also currently undergoing a facelift so please bear with them until they’re up-and-running again.

The benefits of white and green roofs are nothing new to us, but a recent study by two top NYC universities has shed light on just how effective these non-traditional roofs can be at lowering building temperatures. Non-reflective dark roofs are known to exacerbate the urban heat island effect and do absolutely nothing to reduce storm water runoff, which is why New York City sewers overflow almost every time it rains. But a recent study released by Columbia University and City University of New York has found that greening NYC rooftops or adding a few coats of white paint can reduce temperatures by as much as 84%! Just think how much that could help you out on your electricity bill this summer.
