NYC has always been know for its awesome parks, and even more recently, for some rather interesting urban forest projects. It looks like it won’t be stopping there either. As part of the MillionTreesNYC project, Fiat North America is donating and installing eight 500C mock-ups planted with 12-foot pear trees along Canal Street and 6th avenue. Once the cars are removed, the trees will have a permanent home and will bring the city closer to its goal of planting one million new trees.

The trees also serve to commemorate the opening its Fiat Gallery in the SoHo on 18 Wooster St, and last month’s unveiling of the Fiat 500 Cabrio during the New York International Auto Show. Unfortunately, the Fiat Gallery had its closing ceremony on May 1st, but you can still check out the cool mock ups along Sixth Avenue for a really interesting twist on environmental art.

MillionTreesNYC is part of Mayor Bloomberg’s PlaNYC initiative to combat climate change and improve the environment and quality of life for all New Yorkers throughout the city. It aims to plant one million new trees across the city’s five boroughs within the next decade.
