Gallery: FIGMENT NYC Brings Free Participatory Art to Governors Island ...

“Til Death Do You Part – Marry Yourself!” by The House of St. Eve is a one-on-one installation and performance piece where you marry yourself.
  • Looking for a way to get your creative energy fired up? FIGMENT NYC 2012 is returning to Governors Island this weekend! This free, family-friendly and participatory event will fill the island with more than 200 interactive art projects – many of them made from recycled materials. In addition, all visitors can bring a game, an experiment, a request, a challenge, a guided meditation, a performance based on audience input, a sculpture that moves or responds, or anything that encourages people to create together.

Now in its sixth year, FIGMENT draws tens of thousands of participants and artists and is run entirely by volunteers. The event has no corporate sponsors and no vendors, so it’s about extending the boundaries of creativity and community not profits.

“This model is something most people don’t see,” said FIGMENT Executive Director David Koren. “We live in such a consumer-oriented, transaction-based society that when people get to create, engage and collaborate, it feels like a new opportunity.”

Some projects to look out for this weekend include “The Hero’s Journey” by Ben Wood, an interactive epic adventure influenced by the work of Joseph Campbell; “Til Death Do You Part – Marry Yourself!” by The House of St. Eve, a one-on-one installation and performance piece where you marry yourself; and “Silk Sensations” by Janice Patrignani, an interactive workshop inspired, choreographed and surrounded by nature where visitors will draw and paint on silk banners suspended to create a maze-like installation amongst the trees.

“What I love most about the weekend is the level of surprise,” Koren said. “Inevitably, something catches your eye that you wouldn’t expect and the whole show really curates itself.”

Along with the weekend fun, FIGMENT also has two free season-long interactive exhibits at Governors Island—the FIGMENT Minigolf Course and the FIGMENT Interactive Sculpture Garden—both open to the public on Saturdays, Sundays and Holiday Mondays from June 9 to September 23.

    FIGMENT NYC 2012 Governors Island Saturday, June 9, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, June 10, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
