Rarely does a garden get built before the home, but such is the case with the Fishers Island glass pavilion after a fire destroyed the original historic home. Designed by Thomas Phifer for Tom Armstrong, a former director of the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Miesian pavilion is made from steel and glass in order to take in views of both the garden and the nearby Long Island Sound. Blurring the lines between the indoors and the outdoors, the home is filled with natural daylight and is shaded by a large screened canopy surrounding the building.
