Gallery: Give a Greene Grape Sustainable Gift Basket for the Holidays

As we make attempts at a lighter footprint in this season of excess, it is necessary sometimes to look in unconventional places for that one of a kind holiday gift. So how ’bout heading on over to your favorite specialty food store to whip up a basket of deliciousness for your most wonderful family and friends. One of our favorites is The Greene Grape — which people in Fort Greene and the surrounding area should know quite well — and they just so happen to whip up the baskets for you.

As an added bonus, all of the edible goods in The Greene Grape basket come wrapped in a reusable planter complete with a packet of seeds to be planted when the impending winter clears away. Amy Bennett of the Greene Grape told us it just made sense to package their gift baskets in reusable containers and to add a little packet of seeds to encourage the gift receiver to plant them. “We wanted the gift to be one that kept giving – the recipient can enjoy an herb garden or fresh tomatoes long after the goodies are gobbled. Packaging our gift baskets in a reusable/repurposable container is in line with our sustainable ethos and mission,” Bennett said.

They’ve got a variety of baskets to offer that the clever minds of The Greene Grape employees have come up with. There’s the Beer Lover’s Basket for just $40 for your favorite brewer, the Brooklyn Sweet Basket for $100 for the dessert lover, and the Cocktail Lover’s Basket for $120 for the mixologist in your life. Or you can choose your favorite Greene Grape provisions and tack $20 onto the total cost for a basket of your own design.

The Greene Grape started in 2004 with their Fulton Street wine shop and expanded in 2008 with Greene Grape Provisions (also on Fulton Street) which features, “the highest quality, freshest most sustainable food available, locally sourced where possible,” according to their website. If you’ve ever visited, you’ll know that’s exactly what you’ll find packed onto the shelves. The fish counter is stocked with never-frozen selections from sustainable fisheries and the meat counter provides grass fed, local New York beef. It seems they’re sticking to their “greene” guns when it comes to their holiday offerings, too. Now someone hop to it and send us one of those gift baskets!
