If you’ve ever found yourself having to slink into the Meatpacking District’s Apple store to get online, Google [3] has some great news for you. The internet giant announced today that it plans to bring free Wi-Fi [4] to the neighborhood of Chelsea, where its NY headquarters is located.  When it’s up and running, the hotspot will be the city’s largest public outdoor network.

Spanning the area of Manhattan from Gansevoort Street up to 19th Street, and from the West Side Highway as far east as 8th Avenue, Google’s new free Wi-Fi zone will also include public sitting areas like the Chelsea Triangle, the 14th Street Park and Gansevoort Plaza [6]. As the largest Wi-Fi hotbed in the city, the zone will also hit the conglomeration of start ups in the area, which are lovingly nicknamed “Silicon Alley.” Although users in the area will be able to access free Wi-Fi, only time will tell if it will be strong enough to support all of the devices searching for a connection. Senator Charles Schumer, who helped make the announcement, and Google hope that the hotspot will further attract technology companies to the city.

This isn’t the first time the internet giant has brought free internet to New Yorkers. Earlier this year, Google sponsored 200 free Wi-Fi hotspots around the city, including six underground MTA subway stations, giving anyone with a computer or smart phone free access [7].
