This past Sunday at the Carroll Gardens Greenmarket, GrowNYC [5] and the Department of Sanitation of New York celebrated their collection of 1,000,000 pounds of compost! Each week, over 2,000 New Yorkers bring their food scraps to their local green markets where it is diverted into large composting bins [6], and the millionth pound was accepted this weekend. Over 21 Greenmarkets in the boroughs participate in compost collection [7], making it easy for New Yorkers to reduce their waste, so 2013 is a great time to join in if you haven’t already.
Congratulations, New Yorkers!
