It’s been nearly two months since Hurricane Sandy [1] tore through the tri-state area and we’ve been hearing less and less about it on the news, making it easier to forget that hundreds of families are still out in the cold. As temperatures continue to drop, the need for rebuilding and repair has become even more dire and Habitat for Humanity’s vans [7] equipped with tools, supplies, construction gear and materials will speed up the process for volunteers.

“As the initial reports of Sandy’s devastation recede from the headlines, now the hard work of recovery begins to help affected communities and people get back on their feet,” said General Motors Chairman and CEO, Dan Akerson.

“The Habitat Mobile Response Units are an exciting new offering from Habitat for Humanity that will assist families who need help with critical home repairs,” said Jonathan Reckford, CEO, Habitat for Humanity International [2]. “With winter upon us and many families in need of support, these response units will facilitate our efforts in communities affected by Hurricane Sandy. We are immensely grateful to all the volunteers who will work alongside these response units this week and in the months ahead, and to Chevrolet, Lowe’s and Bosch for their generous donations.”

After its initial stops in Staten Island and Union Beach, the mobile response fleet [7] was also deployed to a dozen Habitat affiliates in the greater New York metropolitan area to carry out extensive clean-up and repair efforts. The units are part of Habitat’s larger “Repair. Rebuild. Restore.” effort that is currently providing families in need with critical home repairs, renovation, weatherization, new construction, and community planning.
