Want to help construct a green building? Now’s your chance! The designers and architects of Burble Bup [1], the winning design for the pavilion for the FIGMENT arts festival [2] on Governor’s Island, are enlisting volunteers to help them raise the roof of the playful pink structure. The festival starts Memorial Day weekend, which is just a few weeks away, and lead designer Michael Loverich of Bittertang [3] said that it would be impossible to finish the pavilion without extra help. Plus, the more the merrier!

Volunteers would get the first look at the fun and fanciful pavilion, which is being made with pink inflatables and dirt filled fabric tubes. Jobs will include filling the seating sacks with sand and woodchips, building columns, and painting the inflatable pieces for the roof. You can volunteer as often as you like, for either half a day or a full day; you just have to sign up online [4] at least 72 hours in advance.

Asking the public to be involved in FIGMENT [1]‘s preparations is nothing new. Executive producer David Koren invites volunteers every year because he likes getting the community involved. “You really become invested in something when you get your hands in it and help to make it happen,” Koren told DNAinfo [5]. “It’s a project that’s about all of us. There’s no replacement for that.” They are also asking volunteers to help construct FIGMENT’s sculpture garden and artist-designed miniature golf course.
