Hester Street Collaborative Needs Your Ideas to Transform Pier 42 into a New Pop-Up Park

Big plans are currently in the works to turn Manhattan’s Pier 42 into a new public space , but in the mean time, the Hester Street Collaborative wants to turn the abandoned pier into a temporary pop-up park , and they need your help! On November 3rd, the collaborative will welcome the community to take a tour of the property and brainstorm ideas for the temporary space, so if you have thoughts, requests or innovative suggestions, don’t miss the event.
Yesterday State Senator Daniel Squadron led a press tour through the long abandoned warehouse that still sits alongside parking lots and disused lots. Pier 42, which is almost equidistant between the Williamsburg and Manhattan Bridges, is the last bit of undeveloped Lower East Side waterfront.
Thanks to state funding of $17 million, the site will become a glorious new waterfront park instead of what some feared – the site of private real estate developments. When completed, the new park will join a perimeter of green zones that wrap around the tip of Manhattan from the Lower East Side and around to Greenwich Village on the West Side. The new park will be designed by Mathews Nielsen , which will remove the unused warehouse and open up the land for more greenery.
The exciting plans are underway, but testing and designing still have to occur before construction starts, which is how the Hester Street Collaborative comes into the picture. Since the city space will continue to remain unused until park construction begins, the HSC plans to activate the space and create a temporary park so the community can begin enjoying the space as soon as possible. Along with Community Board 3, the HSC will be gathering ideas from the community to temporarily transform the pier into a usable space until the project is complete. Join them on “Waterfront Community Day” at Pier 42 on November 4th, and some of your suggestions may end up being a part of the new pop-up park.
